These stones are soft enough they will break down over time, but hard enough that it is a fairly slow processes. My Red Cherry Shrimps seem more healthy, and they spend lots of time eating the bacteria and algae growing on these stones. I have noticed fewer post-molting deaths in recent months once these had began improving the available minerals. The plants in the tank also seem to be growing better. In my 30 gallon tank with neutral pH of 7 to 7.1, I cannot tell any difference in the size of the stones after 4 months. I put the largest stone where the pump's outflow / return runs directly over this one stone, and the strong current has dissolved about 1/4 of the stone, while I cannot see any change in the others that are now about the same size as the larger one since it has shrunk.
