Dr. T and The Women

Ain't It Something?
Robert Altman's films are as distinctive as Hitchcock's or Scorsese's or Bergman's: each has such a distinguishable style that nobody else could have made them. Among them Altman's are the most generically varied. In general, Hitchcock gives you suspense; Scorsese, the underworld; Bergman, despair. With an Altman movie, you can never be certain what you'll get, but you'll know that only Altman could have made it."Dr. T and the Women" has all the director's hallmarks: a particular setting and mood (here, Dallas glitz), the teeming, ensemble cast, the roaming camera work (the first, long, uninterrupted shot of this movie took five days to choreograph to his satisfaction), overlapping dialogue, thin storyline, spot-on performances, quirkiness, and women. Only Bergman made more movies with women at their centers than Altman. Reportedly, most actresses would drop anything to make a movie with him. Here, one of them drops every stitch of her clothing in a shopping mall fountain. It's not exhibitionism. Her character is having a nervous breakdown, just outside Godiva Chocolates.Once the stereotype was broken—Gere's Dr. T. is no rogue but a decent yet flawed human being, a professional who cares about his patients—and the story began to slide off the rails, I decided to watch this movie as though it were a funny, unpredictable dream. One darn thing after another happens to Gere's character; just as he is only beginning to sort it out, something else knocks him down. He's Daffy Duck in Chuck Jones's "Duck Amuck" (1953): some unseen hand keeps wrapping weird scenery around him and painting anvils that fall on his head. Those who complain that the movie makes little sense have a point—but that's the way dreams unfold. Characters exit as fast as they enter. Things happen, which lead in an absurdly twisted logic to other things happening. The last thirty minutes explode with ominousness, comedy, bittersweetness, irony, nightmare, and a truly incredible, happy ending. It's not Altman's best; it's not his worst. It's a line drive straight down the middle. Call it 2.5 out of a possible 5.

If you want to drool over Richard Gere, then maybe
I wanted to like this film for the heavy weight cast, but no. I give it three stars because Richard Gere looks adorable and he at least tried to be professional to the women around him. All while his male hang out group we’re oblivious to anything related to the female sex. Only to entertain the idea of being married. The women in the waiting room carrying on in a frenzy like it was Gere’s first day on the job.Annoying! Gere’s wife having a breakdown from being rich with a loving or needy family. Goodness give me a break! She had help. One min she is writing with crayons the next she is asking for a divorce. I don’t condone Gere cheating but the director sold it like he deserved a single gal like Hunt. He was a pillar of the community. The stars also go to his youngest daughter, played by Ried. She gave a crap about her family and at least tried to give them a heads up. This film feels like a waste on so many levels.

Richard Gere is awesome, as usual
I liked this movie. Richard Gere of course is awesome, as usual. What a phenomenal actor. This is a very different movie. Has many top notch actors/actresses. The viewer instantly bonds with Dr. T., he's Mr. Perfect. He is a Gynecologist with a busy schedule, with a gorgeous home. But he has sadness in his life. His wife (Farrah Faucet) has some kind of dimentia or mental breakdown going and it breaks his heart. She even goes to an asylum to try to get healed. It's laughable how busy Dr. T's waiting room is. Women get ancy waiting, the nurses and receptionists try to hold down the fort. Sometimes family comes in to talk with him then his schedule gets really behind. This is a very caring man with a busy life, with 2 grown daughters. And one is getting married soon, so wedding plans are happening. Dr. T. meets someone at the Golf Club and they bond. It is a good movie. Lots going on and the ending was quite different. You'll love this. I recommend it. There are ups and downs, unexpected things. The only thing that kind of bothered me was how noisy the waiting room got with everyone talking at once and they had background music. It was a little distracting. Shelley Long plays the head nurse and she does a good job.

Excellent Character Portrayals by Gere, Fawcett and Long
This was a movie filled with excellent acting from this star-studded cast. The story line was funny and poignant. Richard Gere gave an outstanding performance that was filled with humor, self-deprecation, and thought provoking insight. Shelly Long and Farrah Fawcett gave very warm and poignant portrayals of women trying to cope with their situations in the best way they knew. Laura Dern was fabulous in all her southern boozy splendor. Dona Granata did a visually luscious job with the costumes. The ending, however, took me out of the moment and became sort of surreal. It didn't fit the rest of the story line. If the ending had been different, this movie probably would have made it even bigger because there was some top-of-the-line acting here. Am I glad I watched it? Absolutely. Would I watch it again? Probably not.

Drama, drama, drama
I did enjoy this movie. It's not a typical Movie, it plays out more like a theatrical production-especially the scenes in the doctor's office. Yes, I think the women in this movie are not portrayed in the greatest light, but neither are the men really. Yes, Dr. T is a super nice guy, except for the fact that he's cheating on his wife who he JUST institutionalized (rightly so, though). And the other men seem and behave like children who are afraid of their wives. All this aside, it was interesting and had a great cast. All people are flawed in some way, so I took it at that and just enjoyed the drama of it all. Loved the ending-was hilarious!

Good performance by Gere
I thought the plot premise was good, and the acting fair. Didn't really carry through for me and the ending needs work.

Fun to Watch
I enjoyed the film very much. Dr T was certainly surrounded by other women and Helen Hunt was a breath of fresh air against the hullabaloo of the other women. The film was fun to watch.
