Journal 29: Interactive Book Game

My bride had been eyeballing this book for a while after I had made extra change and bought it for her..... She's into decryption and puzzles which is all over my head but I have to admit this book is interesting.... The method of using this book in accordance with the internet to check your answers or "solution to the puzzle" is genius.... This way there is no way around cheating these puzzles..... My bride had even asked me for help on certain puzzles and I actually got the answer correct when she was blank.... 🕵️‍♂️👽 As for decoding I'm clueless but that's my bride's go to thing when she needs a time out or a cooling off to let off steam after a long day at work.... I love when she gets the answer correct after working on one puzzle page after days of dead ends.... She screams and cheers like she has won a marathon and I suppose she had..... Definitely a challenging puzzle coding decryption book and great for those who love escape rooms and can't get to one... "I escaped the puzzles on this page" she squeals every single time she solves a page..... She will be getting the Revelation book when she nears the end of this book.... This is the longest I have ever seen her finish a book like ever.... Shipping was fast too... I received this book four days later.... One page contains a puzzle, the other a URL in QR Code form. E yet the solution to the puzzle and you’ll get a key used in future puzzles. The puzzles are fun and clever, but often obscure. More often than not the real puzzle is to figure out what the puzzle wants you to do, and it’s very easy to over-think things. Worse, some notations are not clear if you need to write in the key or the key next to place holder slots. And it can be frustrating if you get the URL wrong or misread the result due to the use of their fancy font. But those are actually minor nits. The puzzles theme together nicely and it feels like you’re dealing with a well done escape room in book form. Even more clever, once you figure out the solution, you notice various other hints they buried in there to push you along. That knowledge is useful for solving harder puzzles where you need more context. This is a fun activity and is enjoyable as a group activity.

The setup of Journal 29 is intriguing. There is a secret excavation effort that produced nothing for 28 weeks. On week 29, something unexpected happens. The excavation team disappears and all that is left behind is what you hold in your hand. This book. The book is a series of 63 puzzles that require you to use logic, intuition, some online sleuthing skills and even a little ingenuity to figure them out. Called an "interactive game book," Journal 29 is true to its name in that regard. You use the ENTIRE book, in all sorts of ways, to figure out the puzzles. Things I like about Journal 29: * It's challenging and unique. I've never played anything quite like it. * The puzzles, and the artwork and the aesthetic in the book, are very evocative and often ominous and creepy. It sets a good tone. * The way you enter answers into unique web pages to see if you are correct is cool. If you get the puzzle right, you get a key word. * Puzzles quite often require information you gathered in previous ones to solve. It gives a nice sense of progression in the book. Criticisms * Some of the puzzles seem to require illogical leaps in reasoning, or throw in useless information simply to confound and confuse. * The ending is sort of left open to interpretation. I was hoping that when I solved the final puzzle that there would be a cogent, clear narrative to the whole thing explaining what happened to the team. You SORT OF get answers, but not really. I can go through the book and vaguely tell you what happened, but it would have been much better if it tied up loose ends more neatly. I'll have to say, overall, I enjoyed my time with Journal 29. The book became sort of a sensation at my office. Myself and many of my co-workers would work on the puzzles in spare time. Some folks would make photocopies of the pages or take photos with their cell phones to look at and try to solve at home in the evenings. I think there can definitely be a team-building aspect to this book. Very good overall. I'd do it again and will be searching for similar books, but I deducted a star for the lack of a clean, clear resolution to the events hinted at in the book.

I have played URL based games before. So concept wasn't really new. But what fascinated me was how the author has converted the game in book format. Also the puzzles are excellent. I received today and couldn't stop playing. The hints on their website are good too...

Really fun, my partner and I worked on this sporadically for over a year before finally completing it. Very cleverly done, and definitely some 'outside the box' thinking. Defi itely getting the next book in the series
