Top Gun: Maverick [Blu-ray]

Almost Perfect!
This is one of the absolute BEST movies! I liked the first Top Gun, but this one is better. It grabs you in the first few minutes, twists, turns, soars, crashes and doesn't let go! There's action, comedy, drama, romance, friendship, terror, everything for everyone and more. The acting is spot on, and well, well done. Each character is totally believable and some don't change, others do, and all make this a stellar movie.YOU MUST SEE TOP GUN THE FIRST BEFORE YOU WATCH THIS OR MUCH OF THE INSIDE JOKES AND STORIES WILL BE LOST ON YOU!!!!Basic Plot NO SPOILERS:Mav from Top Gun is 30 years later and is still 'Captain' for various infractions. He seems to attract trouble, and is usually 'bailed out' but none other than now best bus Ice Man, his nemesis from Top Gun. When the Navy needs a dangerous suicide mission completed, they turn to the 'Top Guns', the best of the best, and want Mav to train them. Quickly seeing this is a 'not coming back from', Mav makes immediate waves by insisting the flyers WILL come back, and need to learn how. There's many faces from the past, a brilliant salute to Goose, and several twists and truly hold-your-breath moments. You won't be able to look away, and the 2.5 hrs of this movie (pardon the pun) literally flies by.TRIGGER WARNINGS:There are numerous flying scenes, and camera angles that spin, flip and turn, so if this bothers you or triggers vertigo, you might be closing your eyes a bunch.References death, violence, and killing in the name of combatOne character's death is off-screen, but the lead-up and the aftermath is utterly heartbreaking and pivotal to the plot. Some curse words, implied sex (not nearly as steamy as the first) and near nudity (no complete nudity)

Pure fun
Like many others, I eagerly awaited auditioning this film on my home theater system. As anticipated, the disc certainly demonstrates that image and sound quality at home can rival or exceed that obtainable in a standard theatre, or even one with more advanced imaging and sound systems. Having some hearing impairment, I now find it preferable to view films at home, where I can engage the subtitle system. This sequel to the original “Top Gun” is a technical triumph, with a groundbreaking array of high resolution cameras placed in a jet plane to allow the actors to be photographed while undergoing rather strenuous aerobatic maneuvers. Mr. Cruise, in producing this film, insisted that no computer graphics could replicate such footage, and he was right. The actors are to be complimented for their willingness to undergo such demanding activities! I do presume there was plenty of computer graphics employed to provide the scenes of the jets in the climactic escape sequence following the bombing of the nuclear reactor, and if true, it was certainly of comparable image quality to make its visibility rather difficult to distinguish from the “real” scenes. The storyline is simple, particularly if you are familiar with the first film. I understand Mr. Cruise’s apparent intention to avoid excessive profanity, and the very limited employment of explicitness in the love scene with Ms. Connelly made it possible to achieve a film rating allowing a general audience not to be offended. The massive success of this movie at the box office might make such content decisions more popular in the future. In summary, if one wants to have a demonstration disc for extraordinary aerial photography, this presentation fits the bill for sure, and more than overcomes its shortcomings as an in-depth character study.

Among the best 4K releases of recent vintage - demo quality picture and sound
This is a "show off your home theater" disc. One of the best image transfers from any studio over the past few years and a PUMPING Dolby Atmos sound mix that will make you smile if you have surround sound. One of the best 4K discs of the year without question.I would drop a star for Paramount Home Entertainment not including the regular Blu-ray version of the movie in this package but its clearly stated on the box, even if I didn't catch that when ordering. A genuine disappointment as it has been standard practice for quite a while for virtually all 4K releases to also have a BD version packed in but that takes nothing away from what the 4K disc itself delivers.

A more-than-worthy sequel.
In an era of horrible sequels--I'm looking at you, Star Wars franchise--it was refreshing to watch something that honored the original story and characters. I found a lot to like about TopGun Maverick. I like the way the characters were handled. Their stories, motivations, and emotions were honored. I like how the different relationships between Maverick and other characters (Iceman, Penny, Rooster...) were handled. The Pete/Penny arc seems like a mature relationship (despite him jumping out the window at one point), not just love story filler. (Yay!) The flying sequences were, of course, amazing. I liked that their unnamed adversary included accomplished pilots who were a legitimate threat, but they weren't portrayed as inherently evil. Shooting down other planes was necessary for survival, but the respect for their adversaries was obvious and seeing a(n) (enemy) pilot eject to safety was pretty cool. As an aside, I did watch a review done by actual fighter pilots. They had pretty strong opinions about the mission itself as well as why certain pilots would not have been selected to go.....but they liked the movie anyway....and so did I.
