Magnificent Obsession (1954) Jane Wyman, Rock Hudson [All Region, Import]

This is about a man laying hold of the greatest power in the world. In this film we see Rock Hudson undergo a transformation from irresponsible playboy to a dedicated, caring, passionate man with purpose. The supporting cast played beautifully by Jane Wyman, Agnes Moorehead, and Otto Krueger enriches the whole film. Douglas Sirk directed this masterpiece and of course, as usual, uses lavish color as he weaves a certain mood across the entire movie. I can't understand why no one in Hollywood can find it in them to make movies like this anymore. Especially in today's world, the message is even more relevant. This is a movie you will want to own and see over again.

I was sorry that I did not read the description in more detail before I ordered the DVD......I was disappointed when I received it and it would not play in our DVD player. I only have myself to blame, as I found out, it was not made for American players.(my mistake) I immediately sent it back and ordered the VHS, which arrived in top-notch shape and have enjoyed watching this classic movie!I did not expect compensation for the DVD, but I sent it back as the seller instructed, and within days, I received credit for this item. EXCELLENT customer service!

Got it for a friend of ours......she was excited, and invited us over to have coffee and watch the movie. Now, we are trying to get it back. It will probably require our purchasing of another one :) She fights pretty good and hard. The movie brought back a lot of old memories..........where in the heck did all those years go.......so quickly!! We were teenagers when we last saw it......many, many, years ago! It's still a keeper!

I know he fell out of favor a long time ago especially with his AIDS diagnosis, but in his day, he was as good a romantic lead as was Cary Grant. This movie showed that. He was the ultimate in romantic leadership with Jane Wyman as his leading lady. She played a blind woman whom Rock Hudson fell in love with after causing her blindness. She fell in love with him without knowing he was the one responsible. A tear-jerker for sure, but with a great ending.

Beautiful love story. Worth the money.

This movie, to me, is so inspirational, that I now choose to live my life this way. I can't believe the huge impact it has on me, to the point of tears when describing to someone how wonderful this movie is. I watched this probably 20 years ago but lost it and really wanted to have another one.

This is the "Castaways Classic Collection" version, which must've been reproduced in Zanzibar or Zamboanga -- I was attracted by the low price, but you get what you pay for -- the reproduction is very dark, and the sound is abysmal; many of the words are literally not understandable. I ended up buying the more expensive Criterion version, which is very enjoyable. I would strongly advise NOT to waste money on this "Castaways" version, which is properly named: It should be cast away.

Made back in the day when the story was most important. Beautiful film, and a must-see for families. Clean movie, compelling drama, handsome characters.

One of, if not thee best of Rock Hudson's sparkling career. I enjoyed watching this as a kid and now a 63 year old.TIMELESS!

Toutefois la mort son père à 40 ans semble avoir été un déclic dans cette décadence.En provoquant la mort d un chirurgien humaniste M. Phillips, bienfaiteur de l'humanité, sa vie bascule petit à petit. La figure de ce chirurgien viendra le "hanter" comme il dit et devenir une obsession qui le met sans pitié face à ses avanies. Il rencontrera Edward Randolph un disciple de cette philosophie toute particulière de la bienveillance dont les bonnes actions doivent être tues. C est ce disciple qui lui fournira les clés de sa rédemption et l amour pour la veuve Helen en sera le catalyseur. Bien sûr il existe un parallèle tout à fait évident avec la figure du Christ. On peut aussi voir une allusion à une forme de rosicrucianisme avec l image de l électricité et de l ampoule allumée, et aussi plus particulièrement au martinisme. Par ex Augustin Chaboseau (l'un des fondateurs du martinisme) disait :"Le bien, sous quelque forme que nous le fassions, doit rester secret et ignoré. Sachant d'avance que celui que nous avons aidé restera à jamais ignorant de notre personnalité, nous n'avons à attendre de lui ni reconnaissance, ni remerciements. Entité synthétisée, nous ne sommes plus qu'une cellule invisible de cette synthèse générale qui travaille pour un but vers lequel nous tendons tous et, nous le savons, nul d'entre nous n'atteindra le but avant les autres ! Voilà le secret de la vraie fraternité ! Invisible et silencieux, nous ne froissons aucune susceptibilité, et notre aide peut être acceptée par le plus fier, le plus indépendant et le plus orgueilleux, sans qu'il ait à en souffrir dans sa conscience ou dans sa vanité. Voici les fruits de la fraternité."Quoi qu'il en soit aborder et commenter ce film sans en apprécier le côté spirituel primordial lui enlève une grande partie de son intérêt à part peut-être la beauté de la photo et de la mise en scène.

Wenngleich der Film ja auch nur ein Remake ist, so ist er doch nicht zuletzt durch den grandiosen und viel zu früh verstorbenen Rock Hudson unbedingt sehenswert. In dieser Adaption des Themas werden die religiösen Elemente nicht so stark in den Vordergrund gestellt, wie bei der Version aus dem Jahr 1935 von Stahl. Bild und Tonqualität sind mehr als ausreichend. Ein schönes Stück Hollywoodkino dieser Dekade, welches immer wieder zu ergreifen versteht.
