This is exactly what a tire gauge should be. It works very well. The gauge is easy to read, and it reacts quickly. Good part to have to tell an accurate reading on the tread depth of your tires. I found it going to two different stores looking for tires. The readings that they gave me were both incorrect.

Used this to make a rip stop for the table saw with some 3D printed parts. Works great for my specialized application. Did not use it on tires.

It measures fine, a little hard to read in dim lighting because it has no backlight, but there's one thing I didn't like about it. Any slight touch to the depth needle, and it turned the gauge back on. Which means you can't carry it in your coat or shirt pocket, or you'll kill the battery. The on/off button works, but it's pointless if the needle keeps switching it back on.

A simple but effective and reliable Tyre Tread Depth Gauge that displays the result in millimetres (mm). This is manually operated, therefore no batteries required which negates that Irritating 'Flat Battery when you go to use it' issue. You set the display to zero by placing the flat base of the gauge on a flat, smooth surface and press down on the round button on the top. I have found that, if required, slight adjustment can be obtained to display zero by pushing the button all the way down with one hand and with your other hand, slightly twist the probe that protrudes from the underside of the gauge. You then carefully place the base of the gauge directly over the centre of the tread groove ensuring that: 1. The area of the groove that you are measuring does not contain one of the tyre's built in depth markers. 2. You realise that the depth probe on the underside of the gauge is offset from centre, so ensure that the 'probe' itself is directly over the centre of the groove. 3. The flat base of the gauge is kept flat against the tyre. 4. Repeat the measurements across the width of the tyre and at least every quarter around the circumference of the tyre. The depth of the tread will be shown on display which is marked in 0.1mm increments. The current legal UK limit is 1.6mm. anything below that is shown as red, 1.5mm - 3.0mm is shown as yellow (caution/monitor) and above 3mm is green...... Simple! The gauge comes with a small black fabric pouch, however it offers only minimal protection, especially to the fragile looking face of the gauge. I therefore tend to store the gauge within the plastic packaging it arrived in. It is difficult to 'prove' that the displayed tread depth reading is 100% accurate and bear in mind that some tread tyre grooves are not necessarily level across the groove, i.e., the base of the groove may slope slightly from inner to outer. However, this gauge does display the correct readings when measuring depths of random objects on my desk. You could just use a 20 pence coin, however that just shows if the tread depth is legal, whereas this gauge clearly displays the 'actual' tread depth in mm and allows you to monitor wear accordingly.
