Following The Complete Concerto Recordings, this new collection assembles all of Narciso Yepes's solo recordings for the Yellow Label, for which he recorded exclusively for more than twenty years. Covering a huge range of repertoire, from medieval and Renaissance music to 20th-century works, this lavish box-set contains many rarities and several recordings released for the very first time on CD.

Yepes, the technical virtuoso
I bought this on an act of faith, not knowing much about Yepes, and the reviews don't say much. It is a huge amount of music, essentially 20 separate DG albums, a whole career of recordings. The question is: does one like Yepes' way of playing enough to relish this?I came to this from Segovia. I felt I needed more solo classical guitar and maybe a slightly different approach.Even though Yepes and Segovia were the two great guitarists of the century, their approach is remarkably different. For one, Yepes created a different, 10 string guitar. But they also had different visions and styles, which could illustrate the way music changed in the postwar era.Yepes is undoubtedly the greater virtuoso, playing at a staggering pace at times when he wants and able to play remarkably intricate passages. But there is something very cold about his approach. He does not play with a great sensitivity to the melody. He basically plays the composition. In comparison to Segovia, I do not find this approach very engaging. But for people who listen to a lot of contemporary classical music performances and have a music school sort of education, this may be the best approach to the classical guitar.Personally, I will get a lot more listening pleasure out of the Segovia box set. But there is so much to this box set that it will also keep me occupied.

Wonderful Collection
I already own many of Yepes' recordings on vinyl, but wanted them mastered on CD. This collection of solo recordings is great and the sound is excellent.

A sound Adventure
The ten strings allow sympathetic resonance and those extra four are even 'stopped' by the sheer skill of Yepes. His Sor studies are quite brilliant. The whole collection is a real musical adventure, full of light and shade and some compositions less familiar.

Superb music. Superb engineering. Superb playing. Wonderful stuff!
What is there to say? One of the best guitarists in the world playing solo guitar. DG's legendary engineering. Twenty-nine CDs of solo guitar covering five centuries. Classic works lovingly arranged. Original LP covers. A decent explanatory booklet. This box set is reasonably priced. All around winner in my book! There's some terrific work here, but for me the Five Centuries CDs (two of Spanish music and one of guitar music from Dowland through to modern music) are on regular repeat, as are the Bacj, Sor, and Rodrigo CDs. Superbly played, lovely music. Instead of writing paragraph after paragraph, just know that if you like guitar music, this is a great box set. It should be in everyone's collection.
