Benzalkonium Chloride BAK 1:750 is a generic disinfectant intended to be used as a general purpose topical antiseptic for minor cuts and abrasions. In case of deep wounds consult a physician. It is effective against vegetative bacteria and fungi, but it is not tuberculocidal nor is it sporicidal. Also, it is only weakly virucidal and is not a sterilant. The active ingredient is alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound. Quaternaries are rapid acting, non-irritating and low in toxicity. They also have good detergent and emulsifying properties. Because quaternaries are cationic they should not be used with anionic agents such as soaps and some detergents. BAK 1:750 is not buffered and does not contains an anti-corrosive agent. Therefore, it is not suitable for disinfection of instruments. It is ready to use and does not have an activator.
