A friend of mine swears on this generator and has good luck with it. But he has access to fine saw dust and that may be the difference (other than him having more experience).In my case, I only found relatively coarse “saw dust”, even if labeled “extra fine”. (It’s more like pieces up to 2.5mm (0.1”) in size.) It does work for about 1-2 hours and then stops (at the first turn). Loose or packed material makes no real difference. I do, however, really have to overfill to even get it that far.I used pellets as advertised, but that doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. There simply doesn’t seem to be enough embers to sustain the burn/smoke.It does, however, seem to work well for cold smoking as the temperature increase is mild. (A 2” hexagonal tube heats my smoker to over 100F with 45F outside!)I tried many different ways and by now give up. I just ordered an external smoke generator which attaches to the outside. That way, the heat source is outside the chamber and more potent pellets can be used without heating the inside too much (for cold smoking).

I did not like this tool at all. It burns up the pellets very fast and caught fire during my cook which burnt under my ribs. Would not recommend.

No matter how long I dried my pellets and how well I packed the maze or how much airflow I gave the maze my burn was poor. The amount of smoke when started was great, nice and clean smoke but an hour later it was no longer burning. I'll try to make dust from my pellets and give it one last try but so far it's not what I hoped. I think the mesh might be too fine to breath
