The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening

An excellent book on sharpening - but not the final word.
If your only exposure to sharpening was this book, you'd still be way ahead of the curve. John Juranitch presents all the critical elements of sharpening - well beyond what the average person knows. With minimal emphasis on any particular tool, he covers most sharpening. There's still some plugging of his companie's tools, but at least the fundamentals are presented. There are "better" (maybe) ways to sharpen now, but those fall into the sharpness-geek domain. Someone who fully digests the lessons in this book is completely capable of creating edges sharper than their friends and neighbors have ever experienced..

Great informative book
Im a newby to sharpening and have been trying to absorb as much as possible just so ill have the knowledge. i heard about this book was the staple of sharpening so i purchased it and im glad i did. Its an easy read, illustrations give you a better idea of what they are talking about techinque and equipment wise. It opened my eyes to the industry, what i need, what i dont need, and how to increase my chances of consistently getting a razors edge on my knives.

Wrong publication date advertised
I will give a full review as soon as I read the book. I just received it today and couldn't help but notice that the publication date is advertised as July, 5, 2000 the book says the date is March 1985. That struck me as very strange. Not a big deal but someone at Amazon misled me and possibly others.

Nothing New Here
As others have indicated, it is dated and there is no discussion of types of steel other than carbon vs. stainless. A little self-serving, but it didn't offend me as much as it did other reviewers. As for sharpening techniques, author repeatedly hammers on the relief angle followed by steeper polished apex which is nothing new.I didn't have need for knowing how to sharpen an ice auger (I live in Florida), an arrow broad head, axe, fish hook or adze so a lot of the chapters were irrelevant for me.

Five Star Read
What an informative book. The photos are a little old (circa 1975) but that doesn't effect the content of the book. The history they teach in the field of sharpening is thoughtful and fascinating. The studies they have conducted in their research have been extensive and the results at times have surprised even the writers. I had no idea that the common man could get such a sharp edge on his knifes. After reading just 30 pages I felt compelled to find their website and place an order for a very nice honing set. The package included a copy of the book which I obviously did not need. I asked them to substitute the book for a copy of the video they sell. They granted my request with no qualms.I am obliged to them for the knowledge they have shared and I am sure I will do business with them in the future. I wish I could afford to purchase the honing set I bought for myself as gifts for loved ones.FIVE stars without a doubt.

I really liked this book because it has a lot of pictures ...
This book was everything I was looking for. I really liked this book because it has a lot of pictures when they explain a procedure on how to do something in sharpening. I also liked the stories about how they went into businesses who use knifes all the time and they had to be sharp. It was interesting about the stories how they taught them about sharpening knifes. I liked it when they talked about sharpening methods and about especially about sharpening stones and which ones you needed to sharpening a knife and how you needed to sharpen in two different angles. Overall, it was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who really wants to know how to sharpen knives.

Very informative
Now I know why I couldn't get a good edge on my folding knife. Lots of good information, but I don't like to use whet stones. My best edges have been achieved with a Lansky system. Still I'm satisfied with the book.

Turn off youtube and read a book!
I had previously taken my sharpening advice from Internet forums and youtube. The advice in this book goes against what most of those sources say, and when you follow his instructions you will soon agree that he is right, and they are wrong. My knives and tools have never come even close to being this sharp. He also covers stones, specific instructions for individual tools such as pocket knives, axes, chainsaws and more. This is a great text for anybody serious about sharp tools.

Mejor busca en YouTube.
Muy básico, nada que no puedas encontrar en YouTube de mejor manera. No lo vale y menos a ese precio, lastima que no se puede devolver.
