why does this have a lid on top? Will this leakage

There is a removeable plate on the top of the stove that can be taken out to get direct heat when cooking on top of the stove. Smoke will not leak out of the stove when you have a reasonable amount of draw up the flue.

Can this be used in a small cabin?

Use mine in my 10X24 shelter. Created a window insert that lets the pipe out at a diagonal. Works great. As long as I keep the door closed i have no smoke issues. It draws quite well.

Does this tent stove come with a pipe that has the flu damper in it ?

Yes, it is in the first section of the chimney pipe.

can this burn coal or only wood?

I don't know about coal, but I do use charcoal and wood
