Works IF you add nutrients
Grew T Iso and Chaetoceros algae on plates I made with this agar. Will NOT work without nutrients added. Read directions before leaving bad reviews. This agar is perfect for my application, marine algal growth.

Very effective bacterialogical agar mix at a great price.
I had a hard time finding mix ratio online, but the seller was able to provide this information which you can see in the Q&A section. Once prepped and tissue applied, colonization took place quickly and very effectively. If you need a bacterialogical nutrient agar solution mix, I highly recommend this one.

Basic agar, not "nutrient"?!
This media DOES NOT WORK for growing "non-fastidious microorganisms." The attached image shows two pairs of plates inoculated with two strains of Serratia marcescens, a bacterium that grows robustly on nutrient agar. On the left, I show nutrient agar purchased from VWR. On the right, the nutrient agar sold by Innovating Science here on Amazon. Note the absence of bacterial growth on the right! (I used a sharpie to mark the site of the original inoculation). This test confirmed suspicions I had when I received the bottle: Note that it is simply labeled as "Agar" (you can see this if you magnify the picture) despite being entitled "Nutrient Agar Powder" in the Amazon listing. The bottle also lists its ingredients as only a carbohydrate. (True nutrient agar is amended with peptone and beef or yeast extract.) However, there is one sticker on the side of the bottle that says "Nutrient Agar," as though the company tried to re-brand. Bottom line: Do NOT order this product expecting to be able to culture microorganisms! You will be disappointed!

Plain agar, NO NUTRIENTS. Perfect.
(I got this from a different source) Very good its intended use. For those complaining that nothing grew and giving bad reviews for that: THIS AGAR IS JUST AGAR, WITHOUT NUTRIENTS (written in capitals for other people to notice and not do the same mistake, not to scream at you). What you need is a complete growth medium, like "nutrient agar", or "triptic soy agar". This thing is akin to a flavor-less Jello (or as it is usually called, Knox): it is a base, nothing more. If you guys want to do a funner experiement, then use this agar and add things from your kitchen to give it nutrients, like milk, sugar, flour...then see what grows! (But please, PLEASE, never open a Petri dish with unknown things growing in there!!!) Have fun! :)

Don't waste your money on this product
I bought it for my daughter's science fair experiment. She needed to develop a bacterial culture to test the effectiveness of some water purification methods. This is a useless product, she tried to develop the desired culture in her high school lab under the required controlled conditions , but could not get any culture growth. She even re-tried under her Science teacher's guidance, but to no avail. Even her Science teacher agreed this product is not effective. My daughter reported some of her friends were able to achieve better results even with some home made medium. I would recommend not wasting your money in this product as this product does not seem to have any nutrients. I was very busy recently, so missed the time window to return this product, otherwise I would have demanded a refund.
