Perhaps the best of the series
If this is really the conclusion of the series, I regret that it is ended. In a world full of generic fantasy, Mr. Barlough's work is sui generis. It is difficult to do mysteries with a fantasy element- the classic mystery, in a sense, depends of rationality and the limits thereof, while anything is possible in fantasy. Hence Sherlock Holmes's observation ("no ghosts need apply..."). In this one, Barlough has pulled it off, and managed a tighter, more self-contained work. I think all of these novels are worth a look, but particularly reccomend this one. I continue to be annoyed by Barlough's insistence on sending humans from an 18-19th century society into a wilderness filled with dangerous, monstrous beasts armed only with the cutlass - human technology does not work this way- but that is a minor quibble. By the way, I am not familiar with the publisher, but the book is well designed, with a truly beautiful cover.

Masterpiece
Another masterpiece of gothic weird fiction. Highly recommended to any fans of 19th century literature as well.

Unique and engaging
Continuing the trend of his well written gothic horror stories that keep you reading. This book isn't the best in the series, the formula seems a little familiar. Still, I find his style unique and engaging and cannot understand why his work isn't better known.

Barlough is always a winner, and as usual I was on the edge of my seat, turning page after page long past my bedtime. I regret nothing. This man knows how to write!
