Can this unit playback audio from sources such as mp3's or waves in folders that have not been produced by the interface?

Of course. All interfaces do this. Actually, I find that all of my audio sounds richer, especially in the bass, when played back through the Steinberg than it does when played back through my laptop's internal sound. .

You have to mute input monitoring or sometimes called direct monitoring. This can be done in many ways but if you are using a DAW that shows you your inputs, channels/tracks and outputs, the signal from your input source should be setup on an audio track or tracks and those tracks should have a record enable button and a separate monitor input button. Be sure that you have all your tracks with that microphone’s source input selected, do not have the direct input monitoring button engaged. It’s a little speaker icon that illuminates yellow right next to the red record enable button in Cubase. You can keep your tracks armed to record during playback but generally if you are going to go from record mode to playback or mix mode you need to setup your I/O differently in the VST Connections Window if using Cubase which is what comes with the UR824.

Can this be used without computer

Look, I don't know if this is an undocumented feature or what, but I can confirm that you CAN use the UR242 without it being plugged into a computer. As long as it is turned on, you can use the UR242 as a kind of mixer, passing audio sources through to the monitors, or take advantage of the DSP effects (if you have previously configured them while the UR242 was connected to a computer). I have tried it myself, and it definitely works! I use this feature to play an outboard synthesizer through my monitors--no computer involved.
