Totally Bamboo Double Salt Two Tier Storage Box with Swivel Lid

I keep raw sugar in the bottom & sea salt in the top. Thought this would be great addition to the kitchen esp. during our hot, humid summers here in Massachusetts. While it looks nice on the counter and doesn't take up much space, a regular old salt shaker is easier to use. The lid on this cannot be opened with one hand. I have to hold this unit in one hand while twisting the top open with the other for fear of it tipping over. It does keep the salt/sugar free from clumping (so far), and while I get frustrated each time I try to use it, perhaps the tightness of the lid is a good thing. No accidental spills that way. But my kitchen is tiny and I think I'd rather be able to slide this open more easily using one hand and deal with any spills on my own. It does look very nice and holds perhaps 1/4 cup in each well. If the top slid more easily I would actually purchase a second one to hold my kosher salt and fresh pepper . Maybe it will loosen up with use. If so, I'll be back to edit this review.July 25 edit: The raw sugar I keep in the lower portion of this salt box was a solid mass this afternoon. I still haven't managed to 'chip' it all out yet for fear of gouging the salt box itself. Short of soaking it in warm water for a while, I don't how else to get it out. Guess I won't be purchasing a second one, even if the lid opened more easily.Oct 27 edit: kept trying in the hope the cooler weather would not let the sugar solidify to no avail. I even removed the raw sugar mentioned above and switched (for testing purposes) to regular white processed sugar. Same thing happened. Finally decided sugar just isn't the product for this and now use the bottom for pepper. Bit disappointed because I have beautiful pepper mills for the table/counter use, but don't want this to go to waste.

I read a lot of the reviews and set my expectations but they were exceeded.I don't think it's really as big some say but is a good size and shape to open one handed pretty easily. Quality is great, it's solid, closed nice a snug as it should. It looks good too. It's got more than enough space in each section for what I have, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper. Obviously I don't grind a lot of pepper at a time so there's more than enough room.A note about the claims that it's loose and doesn't close snugly. I discovered by accident, that it appears the lid is attached to the screw/rod or whatever it is that the 2 sections and lid pivot on. If you open it counterclockwise you are unscrewing it thus is gets looser. If you continue to spin it counter clockwise, or try to close it by spinning it all the way around, it'll be loose, very loose. If you try to open it clockwise, it should feel very tight, as if it's getting tighter....it is an may not open.Open it counter clockwise and close it back clockwise and it makes it easy to open the top and the 2 sections, but snugs back up perfectly. Hopefully that is by design and cures some of the loose salt box issues.I'm very happy with it.

I've had this for 3 years now. It looks nice and I've gotten compliments on it, but it spills easily. There is no magnet to hold the top or halves closed and they swivel open too easily. I can't tell you how many times I've had to clean up spilled salt and pepper. In fact, that's one reason I'm reviewing this so many years later. It finally made me angry enough to find a new one.

I purchased 6 of these to give as gifts because I've always wanted one and have just used a custard cup for my kosher cooking salt. They are very attractive. Like others, I found them SO difficult to open that I really wouldn't recommend purchasing them. Often, when I'm cooking at least one of my hands is 'gunked-up'. You need 2 hands to get this opened and that doesn't work for me. Today I tried dropping a dab of mineral oil at the hinge to see if that will loosen things up. I'll update when I see if that helps.Unfortunately, I gave 2 of them away already and am still trying to get the one I planned to keep workable. I will be returning the 3 that I still have... more to come.Update 5/28/14: mineral oil helped but you still need 2 hands to open it.

Prior to receiving this salt box, I had a ceramic salt pig - a glazed jar with a "pig snout" opening which allowed for dust and such to get into the salt. This beautiful bamboo box is a much tighter container and has two separate compartments. I use the salt daily to make a solution for my neti pot, to which I usually add a pinch of baking soda. The bottom part of the container is handy for holding the baking soda with salt in the top compartment. It is far more convenient and more attractive than the two containers I had before - and it takes up less room. Very happy with the bamboo finish. I thought it looked too shiny in the picture but it's just right. It'll be interesting to see how dry things stay in it during the humid summer months.

I bought the double salt box thinking it would be much smaller and more manageable around the kitchen. But this thing is huge and not at all something that comfortably be moved from one counter to another. It really needs a designated spot next to your primary cooking area, which doesn't work well for my kitchen, which has three counters and an island that all serve slightly different purposes. Salt is the one thing I want to be able to use everywhere, which is why I bought a designated box, but alas this feels like kind of a waste of money. It is attractive though.

This product is so convenient when you need a little salt adjustment. It is very well made, compact, easy to fill, and looks very nice! The 2-deck approach makes the salt an easy access and they slide very smoothly and it is flush to perfection. It is well balanced so it does not tip over (even when top deck is turned all the way around.) The 4-star is for the price but I really do love this product. Without the price consideration it is definitely a 5-star product.
