All works as advertised
The instructions, including the ones for if you don’t have a C wire, were well done. The product doesn’t say made in China and the syntax looks like a native English speaker. The instructions, including the ones for if you don’t have a C wire, we’re well done. The product doesn’t say made in China and the syntax looks like a native English speaker. It had all the pieces all sealed as you might normally expect so my suspicion is someone got this and realized they needed a C wire and didn’t have one and just sent it back. It probably took me 15 minutes to put in one mostly because I had to figure out how to stuff some excess wire back into the wall on a stiff, bundle and retrieve all of the correct tools I needed. That said, and as again above, the instructions were good, and everything went exactly as detailed in them. On my pictures I show the completed installed unit and the original base plate I had with the old thermostat. The instructions say, don’t depend on the wire colors, but mine were all perfect, except for the common, which was blue. The C wire is the common power wire. The new thermostat has push to insert and release instead of screws like Modern receptacles do and we’re easy for me to use . The touchscreen certainly is not as sensitive as my iPhone, however, I found it worked very easily, better than the new Walmart, self check out, LCD screens, and my hands were a little cold is probably the only problem. I did download the app And the thermostat automatically gives you the MAC code and another required one when you do your initial boot up. Wi-Fi connected the first time with absolutely no issues but I was within 15 feet of my router so I know I had very good signal strength. The application has an option to walk you through set up for programming which is good because the manual schedule programming is not all that intuitive the way it’s laid out. The walk-through option works extremely well. I did the schedule programming on the application, not on the unit directly. I can’t agree with any of the negative comments about the device, the clips, the screen , or any missing parts because this one was perfect. However, I realize it’s just the one that I received. I did order two at the same time from Amazon and for some reason they decided to ship them as two separate orders, maybe they are coming from different warehouses, though I doubt it. Of course, USPS, using part-time people this time of year, has been doing a C minus job on most of my orders and a flat F on one, although sometimes they get to B plus. UPS has been surprisingly good and as usual FedEx the best by far. I haven’t gotten my second device in so we’ll see if that goes as well as the first and I’ll update this if not. Recommend a do purchase on this refurbished unit.

"Renewed" are mostly just customer returns
This came with a broken wire clip, old wire tips stuck in two clips, and missing labels. This was a broken customer return dropped straight into the mail and shipped to me without even checking if it needed to be renewed. Edit: 7/10/2023. The 2nd unit didn't have the protective film that 1st one did, but it was in perfect condition with all of the labels and no broken parts. The install was very easy, but it turned on and told me that the inside temp was 61°, then that sank down to 52° within a few minutes. The actual temp was 75° and climbing. It showed 100% humidity. I factory reset it and completed the simple setup and registration process, but there was no change. Sending this one back. The touchscreen seems a little insensitive all over, otherwise this seems to be a great thermostat. Adjusting rating to reflect the product and not the horrible users that are sending broken items as renewed. Edit: The 3rd thermostat, also "renewed" had a whole piece of plastic, including one plastic clip, broken off, so sending this one back too. The picture is attached for detail and to clarify the misinformation about the clips breaking because they're delicate. Significant pressure is needed to force the small round bump on the underside of the clip far enough into the metal pincers to force them open wider than the wire that would be pinched in-between them. The pincers will never be wider than the clip, so almost all of the pressure will be transferred directly to the metal, not to the plastic clip hinge. That is assuming that the instructions are followed and the pressure is applied to the end of the clip and not somewhere in the middle. It also makes it obvious that the clips are necessary, and broken clips are not "renewed". Edit: 7/23/2023. The 4th renewed thermostat is physically unbroken and seems to be working perfectly. The touchscreen functionality isn't as perfect as a smartphone's, but otherwise, this is everything it promises to be. Alexa connection required little more than adding the tstat in the Total Connect Comfort app and enabling that skill in the Alexa app.

Stat is smaller than most original stats, you're probably going to repaint or patch.
Have been watching these stats literally for years waiting for the price to drop. Through sales and refurb discounts, it finally hit my mark. Now, two stats later, I couldn't be happier. Installation turned out to be a pain, not because of the stats, but because I had to paint and patch where the much larger old stats were mounted. We did see an interesting color history of the house... but I digress... Wiring is easy, just follow directions and identify the "C" wire as instructed. Programming was easy. with far more features than the average household will use, but I like the "circulate" fan mode, which turns on the fan intermittently for a few minutes - greatly reducing stratification in two story, high ceiling homes. Power outages are not a problem, but loss of internet can be an issue. With almost a month on line, we have no complaints so far. Remote access is a joy.

Android App Broken
The thermostat itself works. There are several pain points however: 1) It doesn't allow you do just change the temperature, you have to set a temporary or permanent hold EVERY time which is several extra button presses and really annoying. 2) When you set a permanent hold, which is the least button presses, goodbye to your schedule. 3) The Android app is literally broken on newer Pixel devices and is actually hostile to your entire phone. It gets stuck changing your phones orientation back and forth even when you have auto-rotate disabled. It's hard to get back control over your phone. 4) The display doesn't dim to a reasonable level and lights up the whole room at night. It will light up my bedroom from the living room. You can set the theme to black and the lowest dim level and it's still bright. 5) The website to adjust the schedule is a major pain and the scheduling system is not flexible. You can only change the temperature 4 times a day. I'd prefer to ramp down temperature incrementally towards bedtime.

It's a great thermostat, after a few tries.
I've wanted to upgrade to these thermostats for some time, but the cost was a deterrent. Once I found these "recertified" units, the price was right and I bought two of them: upstairs and downstairs zones. About me: I'm probably an intermediate to advanced DIY'er, and I generally troubleshoot and fix stuff without resorting to calling support or returning stuff unless they're really defective. The short version: my experience with these recertified units was not so great; both units were defective out-of-the-box. Thankfully I was able replace both thermostats, and after some additional elbow grease, everything is working properly. So I'm happy. Ultimately everything worked out, and I would absolutely recommend these; you may just need to plan on some follow-though before everything works as smoothly as it should. I am a little disappointed in the quality control of these "recertified" devices. The long version: as I explained earlier, I bought two thermostats. The downstairs unit installation was straight forward. I installed and wired the back panel, and then snapped on the thermostat. It booted up and was pretty easy to set up. The touch screen was not as responsive as I would have liked, but I assumed I had cold or dry hands or something. More on this later. Upstairs, I disassembled and removed my old thermostat and prepared to install my second RTH9585WF. Right out of the box, this one had the back-panel attached (unlike the first one). After separating the back-panel, a little piece of plastic fell out: it was the clip that anchors one of the control wires! And there was no way to work around this because it was the "Y" wire is the first stage heat, and I only have one stage heat. If it was the "Y2", I could have just ignored it, but given the damaged clip, there was no way around this. So I reinstalled the old thermostat, and return/replaced the second unit. Delivery time: 2-days, and then I got a message that it was only shipped on the day it should have been delivered, so it arrived late on day three. No big deal, but I’d rather not have the expectation. Repeat the removal of the old thermostat and installation of the new one. Everything went well until I got to the registration of this second thermostat in my online Total Comfort account (so I can remote control the device): I couldn't register it because it was already registered in someone else's account! (seriously!) I googled an 800 number for Honeywell support and a very helpful rep got the issue resolved. I was lucky because I got in touch right before they closed on a Saturday; I’d have had to wait until Monday had I not gotten in touch when I did. Thankfully the support rep was very competent, understood the issue and knew how to fix it. Sher texted me a link that allowed me to share my phone’s camera, allowing her to live view the thermostat. This allowed her to validate the device's MAC and CRC, and compare with whatever she was seeing on her end. It took about 15-20 minutes, and then everything was resolved and worked as it should have. Close the chapter on the upstairs thermostat. Back to the downstairs thermostat. While tinkering with it, I had a lot of difficulty with the touch screen (see the attached video.) The upper third of the touch screen was very unresponsive. I originally thought I had dry hands or something, but after seeing how responsively and well the second thermostat's touch screen worked, I realized the first one was defective. I tried cleaning it, made sure there was no protective film, etc. No improvement. So I had no choice but to send it back. This time, the replacement arrived overnight, and I simply swapped out the thermostat (didn't even replace the back-panel.) I'm happy to report the initial setup worked flawlessly and this unit is working the way it should. So in conclusion, I ordered two of these recertified RTH9585WF thermostats, and both were defective. The first replacement required Honeywell support to deregister the device from its previous owner so I could use it, and the second replacement was flawless. In other words, only one of the four recertified devices installed and functioned as it should have. A 25% success rate is not so great. Total time to get this done should have been an hour, and it took a week. Just imagine if I was paying an HVAC person to do this, and they had to come back twice, it would have cost a fortune! If you're a DIY'er, I recommend them, and just bear in mind that it might not go as smoothly as it should. However, if your time is worth more than the hundred dollars that you're saving on each of these by getting "recertified" devices, then just cough up the cash and get new ones. I wanted to put three stars because of the poor “recertified” quality control, but I settled on four stars because in the end thermostats are working well, becauase Honeywell support was fantastic, and because Amazon's return policy made it very easy to replace the defective units.

Easy to install and use.
Thermostat is easy to install and the software for wifi connection works very well. The app is easy to use and much better in my view than a Nest.

I think it's a good product
Its been a year since I bought this thermostat. I had my ac guy hook it up. I bought the used one and so far it's been good. It's easy to hook up to wifi and easy to manage modes and temperatures. We go out of state for a few months and the thermostat operates excellent from my phone. Im very happy with it and would buy it again.
