Classic Trek
This movie was a continuation of Space Seed from the original TV series. No spoilers, but I recommend watching Space Seed first. As far as the quality of the movie and sound, top notch and worth getting.

2021 Director's Cut Remaster
OK, my 4 star rating is for the 2021 Remastered Edition, NOT on the quality of the film itself, because as all Star Trek fans know, STII is perhaps the best Trek film ever. Although I do like a couple others as much, including the Kelvin timeline films. But with that said, I'm writing this review to talk about the PQ of this brand new 55th Anniversary of Star Trek edition of The Wrath of Khan.First of all, I'm talking about the standard 2K Blu-ray release over the 4K version. OK, at this point I don't know how many home video versions of the Trek films I've bought over the last 36 years. (My very first VHS tape ever was Star Trek III in 1986. So yeah, my home video collecting has gone back quite a ways.) I've had all 10 original films on VHS, VHS-Widescreen, DVD, and Blu-ray. So I've seen the progression of PQ on these films for over three decades. And I've always had a problem with these early Trek films on home video in how the composite shots look on screen. I'm talking about the space shots of the ships, planets, nebulas, etc. They've always been overly grainy with the look of just bad compositing look. Well, let me tell you something...this remastered version has FINALLY fixed all of this. These shots look like they have been newly shot with the physical models. They are clear and clean with no digital artifacts on the models at all. The color timing has also been modified by ditching the blue tint with a more natural grey tint on the models. The only thing that still dates these shots is the visual effects within those shots. The phaser shots still look like something out of 1981. Which wasn't all that bad though as we had The Empire Strikes Back by then, so effects had matured a bit. The only thing I could complain about is that my screen darkens when there's not enough brightly lit objects on screen to maintain contrast. But that's a issue with my TV itself. I get that problem with space shots in several movies and shows, so that's not a complaint on this disc itself. Now onto the live action stuff...while the detail is much improved over previous releases, the problem with this part is that it seems overly dark. And no, it has nothing to do with the previous issue with my set. These scenes just aren't as bright as they have been on previous releases. Don't know why that is. Don't know if it has to do with the remastering process altogether or about the color correction they have done that has reduced the lighting in this footage. I'm guessing it has to do with the color correction process. But in other remastered films I've seen where the color correction has been altered, like the recent LotR-FotR remaster, the brightness has actually improved. So who knows. But anyway, this problem is why I gave this release just a 4 star rating rather than a 5 star of which the film actually deserves. So in closing, I'd say if you're wondering whether to multi-dip on these new 2021 remasters, I would say yes, as they're the best these films have looked on home video ever. The clean spaceship shots are reason enough in my opinion. Can't wait to watch STIII & IV now. Oh, btw, ST:TMP is getting a new Director's Cut release in Sept '22, so hold off on getting that one for a bit. And I hear that V & VI are getting worked on as well. Hopefully they'll fix some of that terrible compositing in V. And hopefully they'll give us the Home Video version of VI.

Best of the franchise
Color grading for the standard theatrical as well as the director's cut is outstanding. This is Shatner's finest performance as Kirk. The only drawback to this film is that since they wanted to cut the budget, it resorted to using footage from TMP for a lot of Enterprise shots. This is the best of the franchise and worth getting in 4k

Excellent transfer of and excellent Trek Movie.
This is an excellent version of an excellent Trek movie. I won't go into the review of the movie, because if you haven't seen it, you need to, even if you don't like Star Trek. This, by far was the best of the original cast movies. That's not to say the other movies were bad, but Khan knocked it out of the park. This 4K transfer is the clearest I've seen in a movie of this era. I am shocked how amazing it looks, given the movie's age. They must have had access to a great print of this movie to make such a good transfer. I am not a videophile, and frankly my TV isn't the top of the line by any means, but for the average movie lover who has seen the DVD version upscaled... this will make your jaw drop.I recommend it for the film and the transfer. It's worth every penny.
