Not really a heavy-duty study, take it as a light, fast-moving collection of entertaining if not 100% accurate anecdotes
One shouldn't expect to get this rather slender book (288 pages including index) for an indepth, studious review of the actresses that the Browns call "the MGM Girls", the women who formed the distaff side of MGM's stable of performers in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Take the book for what it is, rather; a lively, sometimes inaccurate (as other reviewers have noted), but always fast-paced and entertaining collection of anecdotes about Garbo, Crawford, Davies, Taylor, Shearer, Garland and many others of MGM's greats, their personal and professional (often mis-)adventures and their fraught relationships with Louis B. Mayer, who is, possibly a bit one-sidedly, portrayed here as a domineering tyrannizer who lorded it over both actors and actresses and responded vindictively to even imagined slights (for instance, according to the Browns, he ruined one silent star's career because he failed to respond to a dinner invitation, never mind that the star's butler had failed to pass the invitation on to his principal). Note that the authors do seem to be partial to Joan Crawford and dislike Greta Garbo.
