Stellar book. Powerful. Clear. Applicable. Ideal for groups, book clubs, mentoring.
My favorite book of this year so far. The writer has an uncanny way of relating real life to the implications of the gospel—taking those implications to their logical conclusions in ways that we often miss in our culture of comfort. I walked away from this book being much more in tune with each social issue addressed, though it is not intended to be an in depth look at any one social issue. That’s why this is such a perfect resource for groups or mentoring. I’m very much looking forward to my book club meeting to discuss it. David’s use of scripture and theological perspective is spot on, convicting, and motivating at the same time. A “10” to be sure. This could be appreciated by anyone 9th grade and up in my estimation, as it does not use “seminary student” words. Don’t misunderstand though, the content is far from elementary. It’s heavy hitting, mentally and spiritually challenging and will keep a well educated and seasoned believer stimulated. Layout is easy to read, which is important to me. I was continually amazed at how much hands-on experience the writer has already in his young life to have been able to write this book. Thank you, David, and to his family, for giving this work to us.

A Christian call to action with eternal focus...
Until a dear friend recommended this book, I was unfamiliar with David Platt’s writings. This is not meant to seem trite or trivial, but prior to reading I noticed that two of his sons are named Joshua and Caleb. As an old Marine, it made me think: “Okay, this guy is a warrior.” And once into the book I noticed several Isaiah 5:20-type references, only to recall his third son is named Isaiah, making the impression complete.“Counter Culture” is an amazing work. It is at once convicting and disturbing, yet irresistible. Platt boldly proclaims biblical truth as few are today willing to. In most of the chapters I was made to view the huge planks in my eyes before seeing the evil and injustice beyond in my own narrow view. CC is a Christian call to action with eternal focus. Simply superb.

A message for todays Church.
If you wonder if it's you, or if you congregation seems to have the same values as the culture, this book is for you. If you and your church aren't committed to being "counter-cultural" you will succumb to your culture; and become meaningless. This is a great book to help you get back on track and confront the mission of the church. David Platt is very realistic in his evaluations. Great read. You need to read "Radical: Taking Back Your Faith From The American Dream," by David Platt as well. (I do not work for David Platt - it just sounds like it.)

Good introductory book for gospel impact on variety of cultural issues
Counter Culture provides a good introduction to a variety of pressing social issues and how the gospel of Jesus Christ shapes our perspective on each.Platt's analysis serves as a good starting point, but I appreciated the plentiful references in the chapter notes and his website for further research and action.4 stars seems appropriate as I reserve 5 stars for more penetrating cultural analysis, such as Schaeffer/Guinness/Mohler's works. The purpose of Counter Culture seemed to primarily be waking up Christians who are unaware of these issues - not providing further understanding or nuance to those already aware. For example, Mohler discusses several of these issues regularly in greater detail within the context of current events on his podcast, The Briefing.

Incredible
A Pastor in my church preached about this book and I found it interesting. I bought it without hesitation and start reading it. I finished the book in 3 weeks, something that is a victory fore because I'm not used to reading. I found the book amazing even tho I don't share the same Christian faith as David. This book was a blessing to me and if you're reading this, it means that this topic intreagues you too. Give it a chance and I assure you that this book is going to change a lot of things in your life, including atheist too.
