When Krypto met Ace
A new Dc comics movie. This one is animated. Stands completely on it's own, and thus you don't need to have seen anything else in order to get into it.Back in the 50's and 60's, comics were rather neutered by the comics code - it's worth a google - and there were many things they couldn't do. Thus they became a fair bit juvenile and a fair bit downright silly at times. Amongst concepts of those days Dc readers had the League of Super Pets. Superman and Batman and Supergirl, among others, all had pets. And they would all band together to form their own version of the Justice League! One of those things that is nostalgically remembered by people who have been reading comics for a long time. But the concept has now been taken out of limbo and dusted down, to form an animated movie.Superman's dog Krypto [voiced by Dwayne Johnson] is Superman's best friend. But when Lois Lane starts to get the man of Steel's attention, Krypto's world starts to change. Not to his liking. In the meantime, Lex Luthor's latest Kryptonite related plot causes a group of pets at a shelter who are forlornly hoping for adoption to get powers. Krypto needs their help. This could be the start of something...This is fun. The animation is nice in style, and looks quite eye catching. The script gets things just right. In terms of miking pathos and humour and drama. Some moments might be a bit much for the very young in terms of emotion, but heroic journeys need to have such to allow for eventual triumph. And the voice cast are amazing. This is all led by Dwayne Johnson, who acts his heart out as Krypto. A brilliant characterisation and a performance to go with. He has a wonderful dynamic with Kevin Hart as Ace the Bat Hound, a dog with life experience who can teach Krypto things. Every other voice actor does bring great stuff to their characters. And although you don't get much of him, every single line of dialogue that Keanu Reeves has as Batman is awesome, and delivered just right. This is good family entertainment. And good entertainment for middle aged comic fans also. It shows that such movies don't have to be part of franchises or designed as product first and foremost. And that concepts which might seem bad can be made great, with just the right amount of care and love and attention. A very entertaining watch. Stay to the end of credits as well. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Catalan, Castilian Spanish.Subtitles: English, Catalan, Castilian Spanish. It's also English audio described. There is one extra: behind the super voices. A thirteen min long look at the voice actors and their characters. This is surprisingly good for such things, as it's not just soundbites and clips. It gets into the people and their roles. So it's worth a watch.

It’s excellent value.
Bought for a present. Went down well and happy with the outcome. Always buy something you’ll know will please the children.

Superman's Best Friend
Superman's pet dog Krypto teams up with a group of abandoned pets with superpowers after the Justice League is defeated by Lex Luthor and an evil guinea pig with superpowers. Daft but cute and fun a bit like The Secret Life Of Pets with superpowers though falling far short of superior DC animated superhero spoofs The Lego Batman Movie and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies it's amusing enough with decent animation and decent voice over performances from Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Diego Luna, Kate McKinnion, John Krasinski and Keanu Reeves. If you're looking to introduce kids to superhero movies you could do worse than this.
