From Buzzcocks to Britpop, Manchester North Of England is the ultimate tribute to the independent output of that most important and iconic of musical cities, with 146 tracks across seven CDs in a deluxe box set. Compiled by the team behind other Cherry Red box sets (Scared To Get Happy, Still In A Dream, Millions Like Us, Action Time Vision, etc.), this tells the story of how indie music exploded in Manchester after the rush of Punk and the seminal release of the Buzzcocks' Spiral Scratch EP. With exhaustive sleevenotes by the city's leading music journalist of the era, Mick Middles, and a foreword by Mark Radcliffe, Manchester North Of England includes many of the key bands from the late '70s to the early '90s - Joy Division, The Fall, New Order, James, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Morrissey, John Cooper Clarke, 808 State, A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column, The Charlatans and last but not least, Oasis. Although the scene was dominated by blokes with guitars, which is reflected here, Manchester North Of England also doffs it's cap to reggae, soul, singer-songwriters, hip-hop, avant garde, techno/industrial and dance music. Inspired by Bop Cassettes' 1988 compilation (name + cover image), the box set is being presented in conjunction with MDMA (Manchester District Music Archive). Many of the tracks appear on CD for the first time, from the Punk explosion through Factory Records, post-punk, the jangly C86 period, Madchester, Indie-Dance and the early 90s transition into what would become Britpop.

Unless you have a personal tie to this 16 year Manchester music scene.. skip it.
If you want to buy this set because of the 10+ bands listed on the cover, don't bother. Its about half a CD of that, and 6 1/2 CD's of mostly indie band slop. If you live in a reasonably sized city, think of all of the local bands that have played at the local clubs. Thats the quality of about 90% of this box set. If you like brit pop, buy Rhino's "Brit Box" or Cherry Red's "Still In A Dream" instead. They are way better.

Amazing collection. If you are an audiophile who loved Manchester bands in the 1980s, you will flip over this collection. Yes, there are local bands, and it's an amazing collection.

Best ‘various’ collection of 2017
Fantastic collection from cherry red. Charts the history of the various Manchester music scenes. Too many classics to mention but if you have a slight interest in modern British music you really do need this box set. From The Fall to the Chemical brothers these 7 cds (8 hours of music) have got something for everyone. I see a similar collection for Liverpool is due in 2018.

Cherry Red sort depuis quelque temps de gros coffrets thématiques par ville concernant la scène rock indépendante. Dans ces coffrets, on trouve quelques cadors mais pas beaucoup et ils nous en servent alors des titres plutôt obscurs. Le but est surtout de faire découvrir des artistes moins connus, qu'on connait parfois juste de nom, ou même qu'on ne connait pas du tout. Je possède quelques-uns de ces coffrets et, assurément, celui sur Manchester m'apparait comme le plus costaud.Il compte pas moins de 7 CDs, tous remplis ras-la-gueule, avec pourtant un seul titre par artiste. Résultat, les trouvailles sont nombreuses. C'est présenté chronologiquement, partant de 1977 avec les Buzzcocks qui ouvre le bal avec une démo de "Breakdown", pour aller s'étirer jusqu'en 1993, Oasis fermant le ban avec une démo de "Columbia". Deux groupes connus, donc, mais deux titres rares comme je disais précédemment.Entre les deux, les compilateurs vont aligner plein de titres. Si on ne trouvera pas énormément de choses vraiment géniales, il faut reconnaitre qu'il n'y a également que très peu de scories. Car quand la composition n'est pas vraiment fabuleuse, il faut avouer que l'énergie et l'allant sont bien présents, rendant tous les morceaux urgents et convaincants. Un seul exemple, "Man In The Box" de V2 (à une lettre près du succès international, ça tient vraiment à peu de choses, non ?) est extrêmement bien balancé et percutant à défaut d'être foncièrement original. Et des exemples comme ça, on pourrait en citer énormément.L'autre point fort du coffret, c'est qu'il montre une véritable cohérence de cette scène locale malgré l'avalanche de styles qui va se succéder. New wave, reggae, indus, house, techno, rap, soul, shoegaze et pop, tout ça se succède mais tous les protagonistes restent campés sur l'énergie punk du début du coffret. Et là, c'est énorme. Quand Harlem Spirit balance un reggae, on sent beaucoup plus les pavés luisants mais gris cernés par des immeubles en brique rouge sous un ciel brumeux et laiteux que les palmiers étincelants sous le soleil caribéen. Et tous les titres de ce coffret seront à l'avenant. Désolé mais on ne peut pas en dire autant de la scène de Liverpool, pourtant moins riche de styles variés mais pourtant moins cohérente.D'où un festival de découvertes avec des intervenants généralement plus ou moins inconnus et c'est toujours, au pire, intéressant, voire sacrément trippant. Coffret idéal pour un confinement réussi car on va mettre beaucoup de temps pour en faire le tour. Réjouissant finalement. "You Never Walk Alone", ça aurait du être l'hymne d'un club de Manchester, finalement. Attention, je vous en parlerai peut-être un jour, le coffret sur Liverpool est loin d'être mauvais mais celui-ci, mazette, c'est un tourbillon ininterrompu de découvertes très plaisantes.

Excellent and Diverse Set
Who know one city could produce so much excellent music. While not everything in the box set is gold or a lost treasure, there are many excellent surprises by lesser known bands. Moreover, the compilers do not always go for the obvious choices with the best known of the bands. No Smiths is a serious omission. All in all, it is a set that rewards multiple listenings.
