Excellent value.
These stones are just what you're expecting. They work well and are easy to use. While I'm more of an experienced sharpener, even beginners should be able to use these successfully. Once you learn how to keep a constant angle (not hard to do) these things will get your knives scary sharp. The leather strap is a bit shorter than I wanted, but still works just fine so no complaints.Definitely recommend.

Zen-like Fun and Practical
So I've never used one of these before, but have seen them used.I have a lot of "show knives" that I rarely use and just keep sharp with a sharpening stick, and then I have my day-to-day workhorses. I have an AWESOME little santoku that was super dull (I'm sorry if I'm not supposed to be grinding down that kind of blade - feel free to judge me).I watched a few Youtube videos and used the lowest grit (400?). I actually mucked it up a few times, but after getting the hang of it had a MUCH better edge than was previously there. Not quite "like new" (though I imagine with a bit of practice I'll get there) but certainly sharper than she's been in years. Then I honed a bit with the 3000 I think? To finish and polish off the edge.Thing is night and day compared to how it was. Cuts tomatoes like it hasn't in ages and butterflies chicken SOoooo much easier - seriously I was cruising for a badly cut palm with how I was using it before. The set itself is really nice - the base sat firmly on my counter, the stones didn't slip in their silicone holders and it has a nice variety of grits (I think it was 400, 1000, 3000 and 8000?). Really enough to cover all bases.I'm really looking forward to improving my own skill using it - like I said first timer here! I was scared for years that I'd do more harm than good but after my first time (and even a screw up or two!) it was nice to learn I COULD do it, and that I'll hopefully only get better with practice!

Remained stable while working, feels solidly made
The media could not be loaded. I’ve had good intentions to take my knives to be sharpened for a long time, but I had to face up to the fact that I’ve had my knives for over a decade and have only ever honed them. I decided it was time to learn how to use a whetstone. If I have it at home, I figure I have less of an excuse not to sharpen them, because the main thing that keeps me from taking them for a professional sharpening is the fact that I have no idea how I would safely transport them.I highly recommend checking out some tutorials before you dive in if you’ve never tried it before, just so you have a basic understanding of the “dos” and “don'ts”. The set does not include instructions so I had to use this product page to remember how long the stones needed to be soaked before using. The instructions mention you should wait until the stones stop bubbling: I didn’t notice any bubbling on the finer grit stone but the rougher one was very fizzy when I first dropped it in–rather entertaining to watch.I received the set with two whetstones, with a grit of 400 and 1000 on one stone and a grit of 3000 and 8000 on the other. None of my blades is so far gone that I felt the need to use the 400 grit, but I started off with the 1000 on the blades that had some small notches on the edge. Each stone comes with a rubber stabilizer that fits really nicely into the bamboo stand. The stand itself is fully rubberized on the bottom. I had no issues with the stone going loose or shifting while I worked, though when I flipped the stone over to use the other side I had to be careful to ensure it was seated correctly in the rubber holder. Since you have to soak the stones before using them, expect things to get a little messy. The water drips off the stone as you sharpen your blade and will be running down onto and around the bamboo stand (it was nice to see how stable everything remained despite the wetness)I decided to start off with an inexpensive knife so I wouldn’t be too broken up about it if it didn’t work out. We don’t use this particular knife as often since it’s smaller, so it didn’t really have any notches that needed removing. I figured I was safe to just use the finer grit stone on this one, and I was successful in sharpening the blade. I’ve included a video with this review: Before sharpening the blade I needed to run it back and forth over a cherry tomato a couple times before it was able to cut through, and then after sharpening I am able to cut the next cherry tomato with much less effort. After this initial success I tried sharpening the “workhorse” knives in my block, which have sustained some small notches that need to be ground off. I started by using the included angle guide, but it seems that, while the angle was compatible with the first blade I tried, the next knives I tried needed to be held to the stone at a lower angle. I could see a sort of “second edge” along the blade when I checked it, so I had to try again without the guide. As a total beginner I did goof the angle now and then, so I don’t have that perfect machine-straight line where the edge angles in from the rest of the blade and I created a scuff mark or two, but after a bit of trial and error I was able to achieve a sharper edge than what I’d started off with (which I tested with cherry tomatoes as I’d done with my first blade).I haven’t had occasion to try the leather strop yet, and I didn’t see enough damage to the stones after sharpening to bother running over them with the included flattener, but they were in good order and seem well made. Overall I’m glad I tried out the set; everything seems to be well made and I expect with proper handling they will last me a good while. I’ll need more practice before I feel fully confident about my ability to sharpen my own knives, but I’m very pleased to be recapturing some of their former glory: though cosmetically I can’t match the original machine edge, the improved functionality is the thing that really matters for me.

Nice whetstone set!
The media could not be loaded. Instructions say you need to soak it before starting, you will see bubbles leaving the pores for some minutes. The grain size selection is great, 400 if you chipped your edge, 1000 as regular sharpening, 3000/8000 for finishing. You really see the metal slowly accumulating over water.Well know, the real question... Will you get razor sharp edges? Well, most likely, if you are consistent with your angles. The angle guide only has one angle and sometimes it gets more on your way than help you.Elbow grease and practice. Don't start with your favorite knife.
