Does this help clear acne or is it just a gentle cleanser?

It does not clear acne. It is not an acne treatment rather a gentle cleanser that is supposed to help gently cleanse while protecting your skin’s protective barrier. It is supposed to be compatible and safe to use of/while you’re using stronger acne medications so you don’t get too dry. Now, all that being said, I didn’t find that it cleansed well at all. I got drier while simultaneously getting more blackheads. It smells pleasant (even though I think it’s unscented) and feels nice, but I ended up tossing my bottle because it just didn’t do anything, IMO. I was very disappointed. Hope this helps.

Does this contain lye?

The ingredients list sodium hydroxide, which I'd read is a form of lye, so if that's true, then yes, it does contain lye.

Can you wash your hair with it?

No. It doesn’t lather. It also doesn’t really cleanse. I was extremely disappointed in the product as a facial cleanser — can’t imagine it as a shampoo.

This is the only face wash I've ever used that didn't breakout my skin. It dries it out a TINY bit but nothing Vaseline can't fix. Plus it's minimal skincare that's the best. It lathers on nice and doesn't foam up. There's not much smell which is exactly what I need! It lasts forever and if you have super sensitive skin, get this one, not the blue one which also says sensitive skin

I have really sensitive, rosacea prone skin. I've used this cleanser for a few years and I love that it's a great quality, inexpensive item that works well. It's extremely gentle, unscented and doesn't leave my face feeling dry or irritated. It doesn't lather, but I think that's a good thing. I hope Neutrogena never stops making this product.

I will repurchase this again and again. It is great for rosacea and sensitive skin and cleans makeup effectively. I purchase this with the stubborn acne AHA liquid exfoliant treatment. Wonders for the skin.
