Covered Wagon Women, Volume 3: Diaries and Letters from the Western Trails, 1851

This is the third in a series - real diaries written by women who traveled west through various routes. I had a g-g-aunt who went west in 1850 and this gives me a better idea of how and what she did on the way west. These families take similar routes and as the series goes forward, we see descriptions of the same landmarks. This is one of the great migrations. Each book in the series includes another year or two so it's nice to start with the first book, however you can pick up any of these books and read just one diarist's story and not feel out of order.

This was the second book of covered Wagon diaries for women and it is equally powerful as a showcase of strong, resourceful women; examples for modern women who run to their "safe place" every time they hear something they don't like. Some of my ancestors made that trip across the plains, and these stories make me proud of them.

Wish they weren't so much alike.

I really enjoyed reading these diaries of women that went west with their families. I started reading them for background knowledge as I am reading more novels based on this time period

Anyone interested in American History or history of the West will surely enjoy these books, written by women as they traveled the dusty trails to the West. Journals, diaries, make up the books, and you read it as if you are there. Not just for women readers, male historians will enjoy it also.

I am rereading this series on Kindle. So interesting to read what these pioneering women endured on the trails. Their strength, patience, and ingenuity are unmatched!

Great series. Wonderful for anyone interested in women's personal accounts if westward migration.

Although the covered wagons tended to travel the same routes, and overnight at many of the same locations, yet, despite some similarities, no two stories are the same, and each is written with an eye to detail, the hazards of the long journey and the staggering beauty of the raw land that daily unfolded before them.

The pioneers endured so much hardship that we couldn't even begin to imagine. Very good series.
