A quality pen! I want them allllllll!
I’ve never bought a Kaweco fountain pen before, but I’d always heard good things. I use fountain pens for drawing and my first fountain pens for drawing were the Pilot Kakuno pens. They’re great, but the nib sizes are limited (EF, F, M) and I wanted something that would be more versatile and also harder wearing. (The Pilot Kakuno is lovely and lightweight but I was worried about how it would hold up to being dropped or bashed around in a drawing kit while sketching outdoors or on the go.) So after some research I thought that a Kaweco Sport would be the best choice. They’re still good for beginners (the Kakuno is very beginner friendly) but have the weight and heft of a pricier and fancier pen. The Kaweco Sport comes in a bunch of models, but these ones screamed out to me. They’re more expensive than the standard Sports as they’re limited edition, but I’m obsessed with the colour schemes of the 70s so when I saw the olive green, burnt orange, and chocolate brown options I was instantly smitten. And what’s even better is that there are 5 different pens in this collection corresponding to 5 different decades and music genres and there are 5 different nib widths available for the Kaweco Sport. So my plan is to get one of each but I started with the orange pen (70s soul I think it’s called) in the extra fine width. The extra fine Kaweco is closer to the Pilot Kakuno F or M nib, but that’s to be expected as Japanese nibs tend to be finer than European ones. The pen feels solid and writes incredibly smoothly. And unlike my Pilot Kakuno my Kaweco pen hasn’t had a single episode of ink leakage at all. (The Kakuno only leaked once but it happened to be filled with sepia ink at the time and the Pilot sepia ink stains bright pink so it was…not great.) I’m so happy with this pen that I have decided to invest in the full set. I cannot recommend this pen enough. And Kaweco has a BUNCH of different ink colours to use with the pens so I know it’s perfect for taking my line and wash art to the next level!

Gorgeous pen
This is one of my new favourite pens. It writes very smoothly. Kaweco is a wonderful brand. Can’t go wrong. And I love the retro look of this student.

Good quality pen
Well weighted pen that feels good in the hand. Writes smoothly, though i am not one hundred percent sure I like the nib. Decent value.

I've wanted a Kaweco because so many people rave about how smoothly they write, but my overall impression of their pens is that they aren't very attractive. While I view all my fountain pens as tools, ultimately I still like to enjoy looking at them. Enter the Kaweco Student Fountain Pen. I got the one that's cream-and-orange--called '70s Soul'. It's a much more classic shape, with a gold-colored nib, section, cap band, clip, and Kaweco logo jewel on top of the cap. The body is a lovely cream, with the slightest taper toward the end. The cap is orange, but not a bright orange. Definitely a 70s darker orange (but NOT burnt orange). I'm not a huge fan of metal sections, but this one isn't slippery despite being very shiny. For me, it's the perfect length and diameter. The nib is small--probably a #4--and gold-plated steel (I assume--no one would put a gold nib on a pen this inexpensive), and suits the overall aesthetic of the pen. Now, about that nib... Smooth as butter on a hot plate. It's just a lovely writer. I got the F nib because it's a German pen and didn't want a Western M writing experience. Not having my matching-color ink on hand yet (it's still in transit, darn it!) I turned to Caran d'Ache Chromatics Infinite Grey, which I have in a cartridge size that will fit this pen. It's an absolute dream to write with. The one drawback is that most of the cartridges I have on hand won't fit, and in my vast array of extra converters not a single one worked with this pen. It doesn't come with a converter, so I had to order one separately. For some, that might be an automatic 1-star downgrade, but I don't personally find that off-putting enough to downgrade an otherwise perfect pen. If you want to try a well-made, nice-looking fountain pen that's around $55 that will give you an amazing writing experience, I highly recommend the Kaweco Student.
