is it true you still have to transfer the Pokemon away and set to spin Pokestop only when out of red ball?

No the pokemon that are caught automatically go into your pokedex until you transfer them to the professor and no you can set up the unit to catch only, spin only or do both. They will spin gyms and stops no matter how many red balls you have unless you run out of item space.
