These peas are amazing! I used them to make Hoppin’ John and love their tiny size with tender creamy texture. I am looking forward to enjoying them without the rice! I will be reordering them for sure.

Good flavor
First time I've had red peas. I grew up eating a variety of peas and figured I'd like these. I was right, they are tasty. They took quite a bit longer to cook than the directions indicated, but I used low heat. They cooked up nicely and retain their shape and have some firmness to them. The liquid thickened up well. I made a hoppin' john type dish, and we really enjoyed it. I soaked them overnight before cooking. Their website says they will not hydrate and will remain wrinkled after soaking. I found the opposite to be true. I'm sure you could probably cook them without soaking as you can other dried beans, but you'll need to cook them a long time, I would imagine. Given the firm texture after cooking, I think these will make excellent veggie burger patties, and I plan to purchase more. The flavor is very good.

My son-in-law likes them better than Black eyed peas.
To me, these taste okay. They're beans. My son-in-law likes them way better than regular Black eyed peas. So I make them. 😄

Authentic Sea Island Red Peas
I have purchased Marsh Hen Sea Island Red Peas twice in the past year, and to me, they are the best! They are eaten as part of our New Year’s meal when I prepare Hoppin’ John the way my mother in law did. They have that perfect bite, and flavor you only find in authentic Sea Island Peas, that are found in the low country of South Carolina in the Gullah community. So delicious. I hope you try these!

traditional peas for hoppin’ John
Fantastic ! Having grown up in South Carolina, hoppin’ John was a “must have” dish on New Year’s Day. Since I have been living here in Kentucky, I haven’t been able to buy red peas here. Grocery stores simply don’t carry them. If I make a trip home during any given year, I purchase a bag to use Jan. first. Since COVID prevented a trip home in 2020, I had to find another source. I was thrilled to find these grown in the “ Lowcountry’ !
