Well Made and Nostalgic
For its time it is definitely a well-made movie. I would have liked them to spend more time on telling the story, but I believe they did a good job covering the major events leading up to Jesus' death and resurrection. I appreciated that they did display Jesus with a sense of humor, laughing, smiling, crying and upset over his Father's House. It's one of the few performances where Jesus is display as fully human aside from The Chosen and other films about Jesus.

This movie is wonderful on many levels
This movie is wonderful on many levels. The screenplay writer, Murray Watts, has used dramatic license to bring to life his characters, especially the disciples and Mary Magdalene, who are more believable and colorful than many other films about the Gospels. There is also a delightful girl named Tamar, who is the daughter of Jairus, and midway through the film she dies and is resurrected. Do we know that it happened exactly this way? No, but my opinion is that it stays true to the heart of the Gospels. Some have complained about Jesus seeming to "urge" Judas to betray him, and that scene would have been as effective had the screenplay writer simply left the dialogue as it is stated in the Gospels: "What you are going to do, do quickly." Similarly, the scene where the Roman centurion says, "Truly this was a son of God," was controversial for some. Nonetheless, this is an accurate translation of the original text: definite and indefinite articles do not function precisely the same in ancient Greek as they do in English. (Refer to Revised Standard Version translation of Mark and Matthew, for example.) What is important is that the centurion has a revelation of Jesus' true identity. One does not discard or defame the entire production simply upon these issues. Consider the picture as a whole, and Jesus shines through as resurrected Savior. I love that this film, unlike virtually every other dramatic version of the life of Jesus, devotes more time to the Resurrection than the crucifixion. This is a powerful statement and is especially effective for children who do not need to be exposed to prolonged extreme violence in order to understand that the crucifixion was brutal. If I had to make one criticism of the film - it is that it is too short! I would have loved to Jesus feed the crowds from five loaves and two fish and walk on water. Those are the only parts of the gospel which are disappointingly absent for me. But time is money in filmmaking, so I can understand that time and budget constraints made it necessary to make some sacrifices. Finally, please do not pass up the inspiring "making of documentary" included on this DVD. In particular, consider that the idea of this film was germinated in Moscow, and the vast majority of filming took place there as well. It is a testimony of a Biblical truth that God often uses the small and insignificant in the eyes of the world (animation studios in Wales and the former Soviet Union) to accomplish His works and spread his Word.

Beautiful telling of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ
How did I miss this delightful and well made movie in 2000? Twenty years later, I stumbled across this movie in my Am*zon Prime recommendation list. At first I thought it was a claymation movie geared towards very young children. After reading the reviews, I decided to give it a try. (*Note, this is NOT claymation and the puppetry is VERY realistic and fluid.) I watched the first 10 minutes and was so overcomed by the beauty and details of the visuals and the dialogue of the story that I paused and read the cast. I was shocked to see that this was an "all-star" cast and a combined work effort of Welsh, England and Moscow, Russia production. It intrigued me more, so I started over from the beginning with a renewed interest and was mesmerized the entire movie. It is very biblically accurate portrayal of our Lord Jesus' life. It lifted my spirit and humbled my heart by reminding me of the example life Jesus lead and wants us to follow and the violent sacrifice of his life for our sins through his crucifixion on the cross. John 3:16 - For God so loved the WORLD, that He gave his ONLY begotten SON that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have ever lasting life. For God did not send His son to condemn the world, but to save the world that through Him we might be saved." God bless you.

Wonderful animated presentation of the Gospel story
I loved this film when it was first released at the cinema and bought it on video. Now I love it just as much on dvd. There is a wonderful cast who provide the voices for the characters, including Ralph Fiennes as Jesus. I find it a compelling retelling of the Gospel story and the crucifixion scene is very moving (actually I wept). Highly recommended for all the family.

Perfect for 6-10 year olds
A mixture of clay animation, and Russian cartoon. Tell the story of the run up to the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection. Very compelling, and sensitively done. Well cast. Perfect for 6-10 year olds. But great for all the family. If watching with younger children some explations will be needed and a wee bit scary in parts. My son wanted to watch it several times over the Easter Season.

Lovely film
A lovely film, inspirational and well made, I really love this one. It tells the story of Jesus through animation and must have been a very big project for the animators. A joy to watch. I often think of it. The message gives life meaning.

I watched it with friends and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience
I first saw this film at the cinema when it was initially released some years ago, and bought the dvd recently because I wanted to see it again. I watched it with friends and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It is a film suitable for all ages, and although it is an animated film it somehow captures the key moments in Jesus' life, and vividly portrays the various characters involved. I feel that if Jesus himself sat and watched the dvd he would be delighted with it! Suitable to show to anyone, whether they are people of faith or not.
