Q: Since the description states it is made of a "light composite shell", does this mean this is not made from tree pith? In common words ""thin plastic"?

no plastic. lightweight pith helmet. I really like this thing and have two. it can work like portable shade and as a useful "umbrella" in light rain. Absorbs sweat nicely and dries out quickly. Dented mine by accident but it popped right back.

Q: What materials make up the "Lightweight Composite Shell "?

It's about 3/8" thick, and very light but firm. I'd assume it's some kind of foam - but I don't know. It's covered in a canvas-type cloth on the outside, and a coarse cotton cloth on the inside. It's made in Vietnam.

Q: Is there just a band around the circumfrance of the head or are there bands that go over the top of your head too helping to keep the airspace open?

There are bands to keep air space open.
