"Elvis" is a fabulous movie!!
Elvis is a really fun, enlightening, & touching movie! I didn't get to see it in the theater so decided to buy it. So glad l did! I've been an Elvis fan from the time l was old enough to appreciate him starting in the late '50s, early '60s. So much has been written & over analyzed about him that you begin to think you know it all. This movie's purpose is not to be a documentary, but to get across the essence of Elvis, the boy, the man, the icon! It's told through the eyes of Col. Tom Parker who had his own agenda in promoting Elvis, so it required a bit of poetic license to get that across. That turns out to be a great benefit in the final analyses. As for the acting, l can't say l thought Tom Hanks did a good job. I may be biased because l disliked Col. Parker so much. As to the portrayal of Elvis, l have to say that l have seen the other Elvis movies that have been made, & never enjoyed any of them. I know there are Elvis impersonators that people have raved about, but I just never could go that route. They make me cringe! All l can say is Austin Butler is Elvis in this movie. Truly! He sings the songs himself, he mastered the moves, he got to the heart of the man, and he succeeded in expressing his humanity. This is a movie to see, more than once. Ten stars!! **********

Austin Butler rocks in Elvis!
Elvis (2022) Movie Reviewby Debra KoffskiIt's almost time for the Oscars, and there have been a buzz about a lot of good movies, however in my eyes there is one that stands out.Elvis (2022) is a Baz Luhrmann biopic depicting the life of Elvis Presley as told by his long-time manager Col. Tom Parker, who, as Baz has stated was never a Colonel, or a Tom, or even a Parker. It chronicles their relationship over 22 years.Baz makes over the top theatrical films that are best viewed on the large screen. Is it factual? In my opinion, 90% of it is. Did he take liberties with the remaining 10%? Absolutely! Does that make it any less of an epic film? Absolutely not!Catherine Martin (the wife of Baz) is a absolute genius when it comes to costume design. Mandy Walker is the cinematographer, and is up for an academy. Altogether, the movie is up for 8 movie nominations including: Best picture, Best Actor, Cinematography, Editing, Makeup and Hair-styling, Production Design, and Sound.I hope the movie wins many awards, but mainly for the best actor nomination. Austin Butler, rising star before the movie came out, is well on his way to becoming one of the best actors in Hollywood. When production shut down because of Covid, he stayed in Australia to immerse himself into Elvis. He hired dialect coaches, movement coaches, singing coaches, and a karate coach. He spent hours with his headphones on at the beach, laughing like Elvis to get it right.Did he succeed? He did, and amazingly so. Watching the movie brought back all the feelings one had with Elvis. I grew up watching and listening to him. There were times it was difficult to distinguish Austin Butler from the legend himself. Austin worked tirelessly to find the humanity in Elvis, and not just the myth. When Elvis's ex-wife Priscilla, and his late daughter, Lisa Marie approves and embraces you as a family member, you know you've succeeded in what you set out to do.As the legendary actor himself (Tom Hanks) has said, "every time he was on the stage, you couldn't take your eyes off of him. Every single time"!In conclusion, should you see the Elvis movie? Yes, yes and yes! Should the movie win best picture? Definitely! Should Austin win for best actor? A thousand percent yes, and according to his millions of new fans, it would be silly for him not to.

One-sided biopic that disappointingly left out a lot
As someone who has enjoyed Elvis' music for decades but doesn't consider herself a fervent fan (I was a kid when he died), I felt like I was going into watching this film with an open mind. Even though I know a lot of his story from it having been retold so many times in so many different ways, I was curious to see this depiction without being too hung upon on acting portrayals.First off, I didn't really have any complaints about the acting of either Butler or Hanks, although I haven't really seen enough Parker footage to gauge how accurately Hanks nailed him. The acting is why I gave it the 3 stars--it was probably the thing I liked best about the movie. My disappointment mostly comes from the fact that the director chose to approach the making of this film from Parker's point of view. That lent itself to several things which, for me, diminished the film:1) There was so much focus on what Parker was doing that, at times, Elvis seemed like a supporting character in his own biopic. The ongoing dialogue Parker kept having about the "Christmas show" was particularly annoying.2) I think any production that relies mostly on one person's point of view runs the risk of a) being unbalanced in its storytelling and b) potentially leaving out important stories, events and people. No mentions of Elvis' longtime cook, Mary Jenkins, or his 2 serious girlfriends towards the end of his life, Linda Thompson and Ginger Alden. No mention of the fact that Vernon remarried, gaining Elvis a stepmother and 3 stepbrothers. Nothing about his expertise in karate or his extremely generous nature in giving away so much money and gifts. No meeting with President Richard Nixon.3) The director seemed to use Parker's carny background and Elvis' childhood comic book reading as throughlines of the film, reducing some things to absurdity and adding elements that were out of a place for the time in which the story took place. Elvis' birth, the stillborn death of his twin and Vernon getting jailed were told via comic book strips...seriously? Maybe sparing a couple of minutes to depict those events in live action would have better suited their importance. Things like this, along with having some scenes with background of rap music (in the 1950s???) and making it look at times like Elvis was walking through a choreographed music video made the film come off more as an exercise for the director to show off his "artistry" rather than having the feel of reality.Does the film depict Parker's opportunistic nature and "financial abuse" of Elvis? Sure it does, even if some scenes weren't exactly factual. But for a film called "Elvis", I expected more about HIS life. If you're someone who wants to get a clearer story of the man, good and bad, you'd be better off finding a well-rated tv documentary.

Had To Have This
I was alive in the 50’s when Elvis began his career. The movie has created a renewed interest in Elvis for us seniors. The film also introduced him to younger people. Austin Butler is wonderful. This movie is everything. Love it. If you have not seen the movie even once, what are you waiting for???
