The River Between Us

It is like all of Richard Peck's books--well researched and well written.
I used this book as my book club choice. All the members liked it very much and we had good discussions. We learnded a lot more about Civil War times and racial discrimination.

Enlightening and absorbing
The River Between Us is filled with clear, evocative language, fascinating characters, and absorbing plot details. I cared what happened to the characters, and I learned a lot about the strains of living in a border region during the Civil War. Some of the cultural nuances I had not previously encountered, and I sympathized with those who had to walk very narrow lines. The difficulties for free people of color in the South were new to me; I value what I learned from their story. The River Between Us is an excellent, enlightening book.

Richard Peck is my favorite author. Even though he writes for young readers
Richard Peck is my favorite author. Even though he writes for young readers, I love to read his books. They are entertaining and an easy/fast read, often with unexpected humor . This one was very different from other books of his that. I have read. Ireally enjoyed the mystery in this real life story of the Civil War. However If you are buying it for a young reader, I suggest you read it first or read it with him/her so you can explain the meeting of some characters and situations. But for me, an old retired teacher, I loved it!

Great book
I read this book because it was one of my 13 year old granddaughter's summer reading books while we were at the beach together. I really did not know anything about the mulatto society in New Orleans or about the conflicts in the Caribbean. I love historical fiction and this was one of the best that I have read lately.

A n Apt Title for an Apt Tale
Richard Peck has done it again: created an enthralling story with characters that are living breathing people. They have strengths & weaknesses & take us to a time & place when North fought South & color drove people apart.

Richard Peck Rules
Richard Peck writes the best fiction for kids and this adult loves them too. This book is a different point of view of the Civil War we should remember.
