Amazing!
The book - The cover of the book is as beautiful as the story inside.Font size and page quality are fabulous. The story - This is one of those fantastic books which can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The dark side of WWII is toned down for children. It perfectly showcases the magnanimity of certain kind hearted and brave human beings who make the world a better place to live in.The note from the author in the final pages of the book moistens the eye more than the fiction could do.There are elements of reality around which this brilliant story was spun.It is such an unputdownable book that the reader can easily complete it in one sitting.

A must read for Young Adults
This is a YA book but I decided to buy it for myself when I was looking for a gift for my friend's daughter. The main reason is that I have lived in Copenhagen for a while and this book is set in Copenhagen. The story tells the atrocities (toned down, of course) that happened during the Nazi regime. The story is simple yet powerful for the children to understand the cruelities of war without actually going into the gruesome details. It shows what it means to be a friend, to stay brave and to hope for the best. Parents...please buy this for your tweens.

Dull & Boring
Though I’m not the target audience of this book, I read it because I’m interested in WWII books for children. And since there are so many books pertaining to WWII and the Holocaust, comparisons are inevitable. I found it quite boring compared to other books in the genre like 'Hana’s Suitcase' and 'When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit'. (My son, for whom I had bought this book, agreed with this view.) The characters are one dimensional and the story is dull overall. The opening is similar to the one in When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, in which Anna is walking home with her friend after school.I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, as there are much better books in this category.

and still there is a feel good factor in it
This is a story of humanity. This is a story of mankind. It's a story based on second world war,and still there is a feel good factor in it. Every where we read about the torments on Jews by the Nazis. Here we came to know how Danish Christians helped nearly 7000 Jews from Nazis and send them to Sweden safely. Germans did not invaded Sweden that time. It's a heart touching story. I am looking forward to read more stories by Lois Lowry. Imagine,if in this world there is only one religion humanity then the world would have been a much much better place to live in.

Innovative book
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a innovative novel based on a true story. When Denmark surrendered, German guards took their place at every single corner and in Denmark which frightened Annemarie and her friend Ellen. After some time, German guards started arresting the Jewish people. Ellen's parents were taken by Peter to hide in a safe place and Ellen came to hide with Annemarie's family. At night, two German guards came to Ellen's apartment only to notice that they had vanished. They then came in Annemarie's apartment and her father helped saving Ellen by finding a photograph of Annemarie's late sister Lise. They then take Ellen to Annemarie's Uncle Henrik where the help Ellen and her parents with other Jewish people to Sweden. A book recommended to others.

Very light hearted
I like the character of Annamarie, who is a 11 years old girl. Description of her emotions was beautiful done by author. One star from the rating is decreased because it is small book. I would like to know more about history in this book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys history in a light hearted way and also enjoys gossip between small girls.

Powerful Story.
I bought this book for myself - because I had already bought and read The Boy in Striped Pyjamas and I sometimes think wartime stories can be more powerful if they are directed at children.Well I read this in one hit and I was charmed by it. Having studied the war and the Holocaust for probably nigh on 40 years now, I was aware of Denmark's careful handling of its Jews and I have to say they deserve great credit for their endeavour to prevent meekly handing over people of their own, who just happened to be Jewish. The depictions of the Nazi soldiers chimed perfectly with elderly Dutch people I know who were children at that time - I wish I knew why occupying soldiers felt the need to always be so nasty - but the firm need not to ask questions, because if you happen to be being bullied then ignorance is bliss, was an extremely mindful piece of advice.Thank you, Wendy Lower, for a beautiful book, a book of kindness and great honesty at a time when friends were a much needed and very blessed commodity.

This book is a clever book in that it deals with such dark times in a light way
This book deals with unbelievable scary story of News having to leave their homes in ways that are difficult to imagine. It's clever because the book does it through the eyes of a child therefore it retains a lighter touch enabling it to deliver the dark, foreboding story whilst keeping a warm and innocent element. It's a book that I can see is used to educate people particularly the young in the horrors of WW2. A very good read

Engaging and absorbing
I really enjoyed this. My second children's book of the year. It was easily enjoyed by this adult though! A WW2 story with a difference as it is told from the perspective of a young girl.It was recommended to me as an example of an excellent writing style.

I absolutely recommend it!
This is compulsory school reading for my nephew - who is 14 years old - and, loving books and literatura, any kind!, I read it to be able to discuss it with him. I loved the book - a sensitive, thoughtful and thought-provoking story about courage and solidarity and kinship in dark times. In the troubled times we find ourselves living today, with the rise of extreme right-wing movements and the spectrum of tyrannies once again raising its ugly head, this novel reminds us of the terrible consequences of prejudice and oppression - and how brave people will always find the strength to fight for freedom, theirs and their family and friends. I absolutely recommend it! For young and not so young readers.
