What is the mat made of? What precisely is the material?

Fiberglass. It is woven and does not shed. It does not stand up to abrasion very well. Simply pulling the mat with an empty and lightweight firepit on it made holes in it. Not even a cotton sheet would do that.

Can you put one mat on top of another for better protection?

Yes, we use it on our astroturf on the patio

Can this be cut to size?

It is reinforced around the edges, but in theory, it is thin enough to where you might be able to cut it with fabric shears.

Could you use this mat under a kiln?

Yes, it is designed to keep any flammable material off the floor. Sparks, cigarettes, cigars, most materials on fire. I do not believe it holds up to caustic chemicals.
