Compellingly crap
This is one of the worst movies you will ever see. Terrible acting. Laughable special effects even by the standards of the time. And a script seemingly put together when the script writers were on holiday. And yet … there is something curiously endearing about the all-encompassing naivety of this nonsense. You have to wonder if they actually meant it to be this cheesy, or if it was simply a case of the cast and crew just going along with it all, given that it featured one of the hottest stars at the time in Olivia Newton-John, and one of the industry's most respected members of Hollywood royalty, in Gene Kelly. I mean, who was going to dare look at the daily rushes and say “I think this is total crap.” Answer? No one. Plot-wise there isn't much to say. It's some kind of love story with lots of roller-skating, gaudy costumes, and an unrelenting confusion over the musical and cultural theme that it wanted to convey. Part Pop, part Swing, part Rock, part biscuit. It's like they just made it up as they went along, with every moment packed with ill-conceived and bizarre ideas, filming, and production. In truth, the only genuinely good thing is the soundtrack, which was hugely successful at the time, and in some respects gives it a semblance of substance and a good shot at what you would describe as a genuine Musical. Yet overall, you cannot help but admire the childlike innocence of this disastrous attempt at godknowswhat. If a six-year old kid drew a terrible picture of his Mum with crayons, you wouldn't tell him it was rubbish, would you? You would instead be heart-warmed that he had tried to make his Mum happy. And that's what Xanadu does. As much as you know it's utterly awful, it still kind of leaves you with a warm feeling, which is more than can be said for most cinematic offerings these days. My head says zero stars. My heart says five.

Cheesy but Enjoyable Film
I had not seen this for a good few years. I caught it again after Olivia's sad passing. The storyline is boy meets girl sets up roller disco. Standard romantic fare. Interesting to see Michael Beck not hitting a Baseball Furie with a baseball bat. Guest star in Gene Kelly. That dude can roller skate. The music is pure 80's. It doesn't come much better than ONJ singing 80's. Xanadu is a belter of a track. Get out your roller skates, crank up the volume and reminisce or buy this film and remember how great Olivia was.

Very good film to watch

This is a pantomime made into a movie and that's OK
As long as you are prepared to accept that fact that the sets are a bit rough, the songs don't always make sense and the acting is well Panto! This is still an awful movie!

Blu-Ray - works perfectly
Classic 80s - was a flop now a hit. Blu-ray makes old film sharp and clear

Un must du début des années 80
Un classique du début des années 80. Une bande son de Electric Light Orchestra extra reconnaissable entre 1000 avec Une Olivia Newton John au top et un Gene Kelly mémorable.
