M1 Garand Mil Spec Buttstock Cleaning Kit

It is possible to fit everything inside. Storing the M10 handle inside the back of the oiler is necessary and correct. To keep it from rattling, fold one or two cleaning patches up and push them into the back of the oiler compartment so that the flat end of the M10 handle will rest on them when it is stored in the tube. Close it up, check for a rattle and then slide the oiler assembly into the lower hole in the stock, oil side first. Fold a few more cleaning patches to act as a cushion/spacer and fill the remaining space between the end of the oiler and the trap door. For the cleaning rod: First slide the three plain rod sections into the pouch, exposed thread ends first. Then slide in the patch loop and brush (brush first), which go end to end, coupled together (at the threaded ends) by the clear plastic spacer (looks like a short length of roughly 1/8"-1/4" tube). Finally slide in the last section of cleaning rod with the attached white spacer sticking out of the end of the pouch. Then slide the pouch into the top hole in the stock. It'll be a bit tight, and may require a little twisting/wiggling to get it all seated and in smoothly. Once it's mostly in, make sure the thong is sticking out, and then place the grease pot, bottom end first against the rods and push everything in the rest of the way. The thong should just protrude beyond the grease pot enough to be folded partly over, allowing everything to be pulled out easily when needed. Close the trap door and enjoy having everything stored in the stock, completely rattle free. There is a diagram on page 22 of the Basic Field Manual for the M1 (FM 23-5, dated May 1965) that shows how all the parts fit inside. Until I'd come across that, I couldn't get it all to fit in the stock without rattling either.

The sections of cleaning rod are much thicker than standard cleaning rod. Them being made out of steel and parkerized only made me appreciate the sturdiness and long life they will provide for many years.The pouch is a little tight in fitting everything inside it but it is possible with a little shimmy here and there to wiggle it all in. I will be using this and storing it in the buttstock of my own Garand rifle as soon as I can afford to buy it. Until then it does clean a .30 cal Mosin Nagant very well.

It's a good kit, and serves its purpose. I was a bit frustrated at first that all of the parts wouldn't fit in it, until I read the review by the person that posted the cut-away view of the stock and instructions. The only problem that still remains is the fact that this kit does not come with the clear plastic spacer that he describes (mine didn't, anyway), and if I put the M-10 tool in the oiler, I can't carry oil in it. Also, as another reviewer noted, the brush gets snagged if I try to store it in the pouch. The work-arounds to these issues are as follows: 1. I'll keep the kit (with the M-10) in the stock to keep my living history impression complete, and to clean the rifle at the range after each Vintage Rifle Club tournament. I'll wait until I get home to oil it. 2. I'll leave the brush out of the kit, since it scratches the bore anyway. I used it the first time I cleaned the rifle because there was stubborn residue in the bore when the rifle arrived from the CMP, but I'll clean it after each time I shoot it, so that shouldn't become an issue. If it does, I'll use the brush very rarely. If I need a more extensive maintenance solution for my rifle, I'll spend the money required, and keep the better kit at home. As far as a handy set of tools that fits entirely inside the rifle's stock, this fills the bill quite nicely. If I had to go into combat with my M1 like the guys did that I pay tribute to as a living historian, I think I'd be very happy with this kit. If memory serves, it's a better kit than the one the Army gave me to carry in the field for my M16A1 in the late 1980s. Overall, it's a good kit for the price.

Just what I needed. Fit snugly in my Garand's stock once I saw the diagram about how to arrange the contents. Only drawback is I wish it included a spacer to join the patch loop and the brush, since the brush can easily get caught inside the pouch and be hard to remove.

This cleaning kit has all the items that were in the original military issue kit for the vintage M! garand. Quality seems to be equivalent to the original and functions correctly. The items store inside the Garand buttstock just like the original items. I normally use generic cleaning supplies for actually cleaning the rifle, but this kit completes the vintage character.

Fits well in my M1 stock.

arrived damaged and a day late cleaning rod handle with built in flat blade screwdriver broke on first light use. canvas bag included was torn when received apparently caused from shipping (rub marks on outer wrapper)

Good quality, seems mil spec. Metal parts seem like good steel, are well finished, standard bronze bore brush, the two cavity oil container is well made and seems durable. I did struggle at first trying to figure out for myself how to make it fit in the butt stock but finally went on line and found how to do it right. Seller might want to consider including those instructions to avoid unwarranted poor reviews. Still need the little grease tub to finish it off. I like it, it doesn't leak or rattle and is easy to get in and out. That's what she told me . . . badda bing.
