Fun for my 8 yr old son!
We have only opened the smallest geode using the pointed end of the tool shown in the picture. He found it easy to open. However, we tried to open one of the larger ones, but it proved to be more challenging. I’m glad I bought the tools because using a hammer alone wouldn’t have worked well. We’re excited to open the rest of them. I did not find the process messy. Updated 3/16/26 One geode was solid. My son lost interest before I realized it was solid because he was not able to crack it open. I suggest if one seems too difficult, move on and return to it last. I still recommend this; it was a fun activity, plus the sparkly geodes are easy to display and make a great keepsake. Hope this is helpful!

Beautiful & Fun
I bought these for myself. I'm 37 years old. They were difficult to open. Some broke in smaller pieces but we're still really cool. I love all things crystals & stones. I will for sure purchase again. You can't guarantee with nature, so it can be a hit or miss. 2 of mine were solid, but still looked like clear quartz. I'm happy.

Very cool, just be aware they’re all most likely the same.
It’s a super cool thing, they’re all the same. Just basic white/clear crystals. Same for our friends order. So if you go into knowing you prob won’t get cool colors, it’s a lot of fun. They are hard to crack! Definitely need an adult.

Great family fun! Fantastic Geode Kit for Rock Enthusiasts!
We recently purchased this geode kit to do with the family as a Christmas gift! and it exceeded all our expectations! The kit included everything needed for a fantastic rock-breaking adventure: 4 rocks to smash and/or chisel, clear instructions, protective glasses, and a magnifying glass to examine the treasures within. We were thrilled to discover 3 amazing geodes, each with beautiful, sparkling crystals inside. One of the 4 rocks turned out to be a solid piece of crystal, which, while smaller than the rest, was still a delightful surprise and not at all a deal breaker. We used the chisel method for two of them and had to use the towel and smash method for the hard to open ones. Our 8 y/o kid absolutely loved the experience! This kit provides an excellent hands-on learning opportunity, perfect for children and adults alike. Overall, a wonderful purchase that brought joy and excitement for family fun. Highly recommend for anyone interested in geology or just looking for a fun and educational activity. Will buy again for sure.

AMAZING GEODES
First off: AMAZING GEODES. I am so happy with these geodes, I have always wanted to open them since I was a little younger. Before buying I did read reviews and some of them stated some of the “geodes” were solid rocks. The ones I received were all geodes!!! There was a large one, and three small ones. The product did say they would all be large but the product is not always perfect as there isn’t a lot of geodes in the world. As you can see in the photos there is one that is a solid geode with no hollow center, this was the hardest to open and did rip the sock used to break it. In my opinion if you want a faster opening of the geodes use the sock method in the instructions rather than the chisel method. Use a metal hammer, a sock with the geode inside, and a hard floor outside (concrete) and start tapping with medium pressure and hard and it will most likely break open. In my opinion the value for money is very good. I myself adore crystals and geodes and I was fascinated that I could show light to each part of the geode after the inside of it being dark for more than a million years! If you or your child wants to open these up… I RECOMMEND. The National Geographic safety goggles do not fit my face at all, but if you aren’t using the sock method then do use them! The instructions are not super detailed BUT you can always find a tutorial online. Again, I am satisfied with my purchase and the quality and safety of the product. ;)

Beware of the packaging if gifting
Bought as a Christmas gift. I love the idea and I'm sure my grandson will have fun "chipping" open the geodes. I gave it a 3 star rating only because the box it came in was plain cardboard with black lettering, dull, and very ugly. I have seen similar products from National Geographic in stores that were in beautiful boxes so I assumed that was what I ordered.

Worth the money!
This geode cracking kit was a fantastic hands-on activity for my kids—and honestly, I enjoyed it just as much! The kit came with several real geodes, safety goggles, and clear instructions. Cracking them open was safe and exciting, and each one revealed a unique and beautiful crystal formation inside. It's both educational and fun—perfect for sparking interest in geology and science. We learned about how geodes form and had some great conversations while exploring each one. Highly recommend for curious kids (and adults!) who love discovery and a bit of a surprise.

Bought this for my friend’s son who is a young rock lovers. He loves it! Yet, it actually very hard to break and require support from adult to open it. Buy it if you know his / her parents won’t mind to help the little explorer. It’s a good experience. I think this box sets is in good portions. I know there is another box set that has more stones but charge just a little bit more. Very tempting, isn’t it? But after reading the reviews, the version with more stones brings higher expectations. So when the little explorer finds all the stones are actually similar, they become disappointed. And the helpers get disappointed as well (according to my friend, it requires quite some efforts to open each stone). So 4pcs version is a good experience. 10 pcs will be too much.
