A Queer History of the United States (ReVisioning History)

Comprehensive and well researched
I've read a lot of history on LGBTs and still I learned quite a bit. The author starts at the earliest American history, and covers a lot of ground in the 17th century. Still, about half the book is from post WWII era to about 2000. He offers analysis as well, suggesting why things happened, what people's motivations were, in addition to just facts. Additionally, he quotes from ordinary people struggling with their sexuality throughout history, and those who either oppress or support the community. It covers most everything you would want to know without becoming tedious. Really a good read.

bought this for my republican brother in law
I caught him reading a BS book by a conservative news pundit about how communists have ruined the US which really ticked me off. I was so happy to find this thorough, academic, and well researched history of the US focused on Queer stories and figures. I know this is dry, and I haven't actually read it (other than excerpts) but I think it's awesome and I want more of it. I have no idea if he's actually read it yet, but I'm glad it exists and I hope to see more.

solid but a revised version would go far
This is an important and groundbreaking work. I would love for there to be a revised edition that includes more about gender identity and a more modern understanding of queer and diverse gender identities that have garnered public attention in the last thirteen years since this book was published.

A Queer History in the United States is worth you time.
Since I have been alive and living in the United States during the covered period covered in "A Queer History in the United States" and been involved in the Queer community, I am aware of most of the historical period covered. I found the book interesting but covered very little that wasn't already known. Far better reading and little known facts are better covered in Lillian Faderman's book, "The Gay Revolution" which is also available on Amazon.com.

Rarely have I read a book that makes me think so much, a book that needs a highlighter in hand
Rarely have I read a book that makes me think so much. I have to read it with a highlighter and wish I had a photographic memory to retain it all. This book defies being read quickly. Like for "A People's History of the United States," this book makes me look back at history but through a different lens. Although I bought the book to look at Queer history, I didn't realize this books is really a history of sexual, gender differences, and "othering." Perhaps that's what queer history is, but I'm more familiar with gay history and have not encountered this wider view of all non heteronormative behavior before. While I thought it would be like other history books, recounting dates and facts, this book is far better in that it attempts to give the reasons behind the history. It forces you think bigger. I have a degree in Religious Studies, an interest in spirituality and social commentary. I found the information on Transcendentalism and the development of an American ethos very interesting. This is a book that I will reread many times. If I'm gushing it's because I haven't read a lot of gay/queer history so I don't have enough experience with it to compare it with other texts, as other reviewers here might.

Teach this in School
I could not put this book down. I am bit of a history buff and this book had me spell bound. It brings together so many historical intersections not just of the queer community but also of slavery, the patriarchy, the suffragette movement, Women, reproductive advances, and the Bill of Rights. This should be taught in school. I am reading it for a second time.

enlightening
This book gave a brief history of the American queer community. There was so much that I had never heard of, yet at the same time so much that recognised in history class. I could it heart warming to see myself in history in a way that I never had. It also gave me some great ideas about parts of history to research further.
