It was forty years ago today, and the summer of 1967 in San Francisco was magic, indeed. Out of that historic scene came Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, with a rock sound from the outer planets surrounding a fiery core of ageless blues. Time has passed but the heat hasn't subsided as Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, and Dave Getz welcome guitarist Chad Quist and spectacular singer Sophia Ramos for a brand new blazing of all the Big Brother favorites and some stellar new songs. This DVD is taken from an inspired appearance before an adoring audience at the Burg Herzberg Festival in Germany. The recording quality is superb and the group's fervor was caught with six cameras! The original band members' joy at playing this concert is reinforced by knowing they found an amazing performer to handle the legendary Janis Joplin vocals. Sophia Ramos has grit, soul and charisma to spare as she charges through the Big Brother classics Ball and Chain, Piece of My Heart, Women is Losers, and others. Nice DVD by an underated band
Nice DVD by an underated band. Granted Janis WAS the focal point and she sure sang her ass off. But Janis died way too young and Big Brother & the Holding Company have continued ,off and on, for years. This is a concert from the time that the incredible Sophia Ramos fronted the band. Sophia, like Janis, has a very magnetic stage presence. That said, their performance styles are different and so is their singing. Sophia is no clone and makes the songs her own. Original members Sam Andrews ,Peter Albin and Dave Getz hold down the groove and Chad Quist adds in his guitar. The set list consists of the hits you expect, plus a couple new songs.

Live and Loud in Germany
Back in the 60s when Big Brother and Janis were recording and touring, some critics considered the band sloppy, and unprofessional, leading Janis to find better bands and musicians.Over time we realized it takes more than great musicians to make great bands.Which is why Big Brother is the band Janis is most remembered by.They were her best band, and had more feeling than her other bands. They might have been young and alittle rough around the edges, but still developing as musicians. And 40 yrs later this dvd proves it.The band here are great musicians and tight. They sound fantastic and better than ever.Their new singer Sophia Ramos is great and does the Janis songs so well she makes them her own without trying to copy Janis Joplin. The dvd includes a concert with most of the. great songs. There's bonus interviews with the band also.I recommend this dvd to old and new fans.
