Inspired my desire for zen decorating.

`Japanese Style' was originally written and compiled in 1985 and reprinted in 2004 and the images inside are simply beautiful. This has a brief written introduction before you come to over 750 photos of various Japanese homes. This looks at both modern and traditional Japanese architecture and the modern style has dated some what (having been photographed in the 80's) but the traditional homes are timeless and beautiful. There are plenty of images of shoji screens, tatami mats, zen gardens and intimate meditation areas, as well as more basic rooms used for study, watching TV or preparing food. If you are looking for ideas for your home then this is a wonderful place to go, each image is briefly annotated so you know what you are looking at and the inspiration leaps out of the book with every turn of the page. There is also a section at the back noting where you can buy various Japanese items (from furniture and homeware to bonsai tools and sushi ingredients) in London and around the UK. Be aware some of the retailers no longer exist or have moved location so check online first. All in all this is a beautiful coffee table format book showing some aspects of the unique style in Japan and makes for interesting and inspiring reading.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

This wonderful coffee-table-book inspired my undying love for Japan from before I even realized it. I perused the full-color pages at length on a regular basis often fantasizing of one day owning or designing my own home in this same style. I can recommend it to anyone looking for a little design inspiration for interior décor or to anyone captivated by the simpler, minimalistic elegances of a (somewhat stereotypical) Japanese home.

i lived with the pages of these lovely book for years. from time to time i was visiting its pages for inspiration, for suggestions or just to live for a while in his mystic and exotic world.

This book has an incredible number of high quality photographs that really captures the essence of the Japanese style. Everything from the simplicity of a rock garden to the complexity of the traditional Machiya house with layered shoji screens, shoji doors and spaces opening to more spaces. Really well done!

This has got to be one of the best "Style" Books ever published. Excellent examples of architecture, beautiful interior design, and superb photography. Just the right juxtaposition of traditional and modern. Each of the major sections has both Japanese and Western Styles. Normally this would not mix, had it been contrived, but all of the examples in the book are real houses where people live and work. No Architectural Digest type of Houses that look artificial and posed are to be found in this book. My favorites are the tranditional Japanese houses of which there really great examples. This book can give you hundreds of ideas for decorating your house tastefully. The photography really does justice to these houses and the subtle aesthetics of the Japanese Style.I collect "Style Books", and this has long been one of my favorites. I have had this book for over ten years and still look at it from time to time.I would like to point out that the other review for this book below refers to a Miniature version of this book, and is probably a misunderstanding of some sort.

I bought a used copy for my daughter. This way I can keep my own copy. A great book if you are into Japanese design, which is world class.

I had wanted this book for over 10 years and was delighted to pick it up recently. Fabulous for the photography of traditional interiors. Most of the modern interiors are ghastly and now dated.

Bit disappointed not very inspiring but very cheap book.
