Sam's Cookie
K**Y
A really negative story
In summary, Sam has cookie. Doggie takes cookie. Sam is mad and hits doggie. Doggie gets mad and chases Sam and tried to hurt him. Mom finally notices and stops it, and gives Sam another cookie. I kid you not. This is not what I want to convey to my child about how to treat dogs, or how we should expect dogs to treat children.

Toddler justice is served
My 2-year-old son loves this book and several of the other Sam books. Here is a rundown of the plot and a response to the negative reviews of this book. While Sam is eating his cookie, the dog steals it. Sam gets angry because the dog stole his cookie so he mistreats the dog. The dog gets angry for being mistreated and growls, scaring Sam. Mommy rescues Sam from the angry dog, gives Sam a replacement cookie and gives the dog a bone. Both Sam and the dog have learned their lessons, and all is well. One reviewer wrote that Sam is spoiled, but I disagree; he gets a new cookie because it is justice to get a new cookie when yours is stolen, and that's how good toddler books end. The child reading this book learns that he can get help for a situation he can't yet handle, (even when he handles it wrong at first) and that things will turn out all right in the end, which makes the child feel safe. (Unfortunately, when they get older they learn that things don't always turn out all right.)I agree that Sam mistreats the dog, but the story shows a natural consequence of mistreating an animal, since the dog responds by getting angry. It's a good opportunity to talk about how to treat animals, and the reaction of the dog in the book reinforces the idea that you don't mistreat animals, even when they do something you don't like. (You can discipline a dog without mistreating it.) The book is realistic and it does what books are supposed to do; it entertains while letting children experience difficult situations and consequences through fictional characters so they are better equipped to deal with things that happen in real life. Toddlers can relate to Sam and can enjoy correcting him (and the dog). My son likes to say, "No, no, doggie!" because he knows the dog should not take Sam's cookie. He also likes to tell Sam, "No hit dog!" when he sees Sam hurting the dog. He feels like a big boy when he knows right from wrong and can correct someone else (a child or an animal in a book) instead of being the one getting told "no" for a change.

Important for babies and toddlers!
I am a retired children's librarian, and am convinced that reading to children , even under a year of age ,is a huge boost to developing brains, and instilling a love of reading. This is an easy and fun book to read to a baby; I love all the "Sam" books and am sorry that they seem to have gone out of print. I purchased this as a baby gift, along with "Hungry Caterpillar" and the classic "Goodnight Moon". Grab them for your children and grandchildren and any other littleones you know!

A second generation still loving these books
Wish this entire series could come back and sold for this great price. My 2 year old granddaughter absolutely loves this, as did my own children 35 - 40 years ago. Lovely hardback, and just the right size for little hands.

Wish the Sam books were all still in print
Like all the other Sam books by Barbro Lindgren, this book shows a little slice of what toddlers' lives are really like. In this one, Sam is playing with his car. Lisa comes and tries to take it. A minor tussle occurs before there is a resolution. These books are short and perfect for toddlers. Our daughter loved them as a child and now we are reading them over and over to our 20 month old granddaughter.

One of my favorite books ever.
This was my son's first book that I read to him at age 6 months. He is now 25. I give this book to all the new babiesI can! The plot structure of the book as well the resolution were excellent and could be a model for all books regardlessof the age of the reader. My baby son loved this book and reacted with excitement and pleasure.

Happy to have a found Sam again!
An old time favorite in our family. We have several in the "Sam" series. Sam is cute, clever, and into all kinds of mischief. Toddlers and preschoolers will love Sam and Doggie. The books are difficult to find, some seem to be back in print, used copies are very expensive. If you see them, snatch them up. They make a great addition to any book collection.

Wonderful book
I have read this book to my children with such pleasure and now I read it to my grandchildren. This is one of my favorite reads to the very little ones. Children can easily emphasize with Sam's feelings as his cookie gets eaten by a dog...
