GoMotion 3-Watt Sternum Light Kit

I don't know how well this item works, because I wound up returning it. It wasn't clear to me that the user had to be wearing a backpack or something with straps for this to attach to. I thought it wrapped around your chest. Amazon accepted the return, so that was good, but I would have preferred not to have the hassle. I think the description of the item should make this point clearer.

This will keep you alive. I used to have to be very aware of distracted drivers when I ran at night. Now they see me before I get close enough to see if they are using their phones.

This is an innovative product, and it might be the right solution for many. Certainly the prospect of not having to wear heavy things strapped to one's forehead is a blessing. However, the sternum light's principal flaw is the disconnect between where you're looking and where the light is shining. What's that over there? Hold on, let me reorient my entire body to find out... In fact it's not that bad; you just need to reach over and temporarily reorient the lamp with your hand and then let go when you're done (the elastics snap it back into place). Still, it requires the use of a hand, which may be occupied with a hiking pole, so directing the light is not going to be as carefree and instantaneous as with a headlamp. I'd say the GoMotion is best used in conjunction with a small headlamp. It allows you to reduce the weight of your headlamp and offers redundancy. It also seems more likely to still be with you after a serious fall--one that would easily remove a headlamp from your head.
