Yundi, one of the world's greatest pianist with a popstar following, turns to repertoire from his native China on his newest release Red Piano. While Yundi is best known his triumphs in works of western composers, particularly Chopin, Red Piano shows his ability to seamlessly unite Eastern and Western cultures. Anchored by The Yellow River Concerto, the release features traditional Chinese folksongs that have been arranged to reflect the lush Western Romantic tradition in which Yundi excels. Lavishly deploying folk melodies, and evoking epic vistas, the Yellow River Piano Concerto - a flower of Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution - has its source in patriotic cantata, composed in 1939 by Paris-trained Xian Xinghai. Complementing the concerto are evocative arrangements of favorite songs that show Yundi at his most personal and beguiling. For Yundi, Red Piano is both a personal and patriotic statement celebrating the music and tradition of his native land.

Love it!
As a professional musician, i have to say, i love Yundi, love his tone, and love his music, always delicate, so many detail, layers, and color changing. If you are professional musician, don't miss no.7 Pi Hang, it mixes elements from Perking opera with contemporary composition technique, show you brand new "Perking Opera" in piano style, nice eastern and western music combination.

Change of Pace
This is a nice segue from the standard piano fare-modern compositions from a local source (China). The pieces are nicely played and should delight any piano aficionado. The Yellow River Piano Concerto (tr. 1-4) is my favorite.

Very good performance
Yundi Li's Version of Yellow River Concerto is one the best recordings that I have ever listened. From Chengzong Yin to Lang Lang and Yundi Li, the Yellow River has been abandoning its political color inside the music and involving more modern characteristics. Yundi explains the concerto in his own way and I personally love it!

Refined playing of beautiful Chinese music
I thoroughly enjoyed this yet another fine recording of Yundi Li, and have no reservation to recommend it to others interested in these timeless Chinese classics. Yundi breathed new life into the pieces through his magical fingures to give us these refreshing reditions. It is interesting to compare this CD with that of one of Li's compatriots and colleagues, Mr. Lang's Dragon Songs, which contains a similar all-Chinese repertoire, in fact, several pieces are the same, including: The yellow river concerto and celebrating our new life (which was translated as "Happy Times" by Mr. Lang, perhaps to efface some of the political sentiments of the title to attract a wider audience). In fact, Mr. Lang has played some of the other pieces, such as Liu Yang River, colorful clouds chasing the moon, and my motherland in some other occasions and recordings. So it's interesting to see their styles in vivid contrast. I personally prefer Mr. Li's version much better. However, one hold back, though, is that in Li's version of the yellow river concerto, the orchestral support is much more inadequate compared with the luscious orchestral sound as heard in Lang's version. It is more likely a done-in by the still too young NCPA orchestra rather than a manifestation of Mr. Li's already refined artistry and musicmanship. To say it all, if you enjoyed Mr. Lang's 2006 Dragon Songs album and look forward to some more treats in that style, look no further. Here Yundi has offered a much more interesting selection with wider representation of Chinese piano works. As qyu said, through Yundi's renewed interpretation some pieces have been abandoning their political color and can be appreciated by all for pure musical joy.Personal favouraites:In that place wholly farawayGlowing red morningstar liliesPi HuangRemote Shangri-laLiu Yang RiverColorful clouds chasing the moonFive Yunnan Folk Songs
