Great Synthesizer
I have played keyboards for around 50 years in bands but in recent years as more of just a hobby. Started playing with a group again and most of the music has much more modern sounds so I decided to upgrade to a synthesizer this time. Have been very pleased with the thousands of sounds this keyboard has and its features which I am still learning. The group gives it a thumbs up as well. At 35 pounds, it is a lot lighter than its predecessor of more than 70 pounds so moving it around is a lot easier too.

What makes it special?
Well, having been playing piano for 50 years, I like the way this keyboards feel. It is super light weight for gigs, looks frail but is actually super strong, and always works… without any bugs. The trick to this keyboard is in the layering. You can take 5 complete patches, say a yamaha grand, and excellent pad, strings, a base and a flute, and lay them out next to each other like on a mixing board. The super knob, via a pedal allows you to switch the levels, input, effects between them on the fly. Everything works seamlessly through the USB to you favorite DAW - it works well with MainStage, Logic, Akai MPC, cubase and ableton Live. If you want, it is easy to add granular sounds to any patch with super knob giving you control. It has the ability to merge any two sounds, say a trumpet and a bagpipe… whatever you want with smart morph. It is quite an amazing workhorse. Also of note- the arpeggio system is quite amazing - almost all genres is music are represented with a intuitive system. So i.e. you can play a couple of chords of piano music and have the arpeggio add a perfect bass line for whatever music you are playing- it is all there (funk, pop, rock, dance, Edmiston, country, classical etc…). It is crazy. So the downside — it is Japanese. Their language and hence culture is visual in their writing- think hieroglyphics… so their user manual- that are great and easy to understand for them - do not translate very well. What that means for you? YouTube. Just learn one thing at a time: start with the super knob and scenes. Next arpeggios. Then sound design and super morph. After learning that - you will realize why this synth blows everything else out of the water for live use and studio use. If you never learn those three things and just play the presets - you have missed out. All the reviews online - sound on sound, mix magazine, computer music magazine - never spend the time to learn this simple thing - and hence - do not understand the full value of this keyboard. Also, pick up a yamaha fc7 pedal (for the super knob) and an Akai expression pedal in addition to the yamaha sustain pedal.Buy this, learn the above mentioned 4 basics- and you are set. You can then spend the next couple of years learning the creative ways to make more sounds. This thing is endless. Finally, 1. download the free borsendorfer grand piano and free chick corea keyboard setup… 2. use the same usb port to update you keyboard via usb memory stick and 3. utilize yamaha Soundmondo user created library via that port. Tons of amazing sounds created by users. All in all a great, light weight, amazing workhorse.
