Please see photo example. **SIZE: I make the letters about 2.7" tall so that little hands can handle the pieces. I feel like the pieces at that size are not too small for chocking hazards, yet not too big for little hands. The width does vary drastically depending on not only the number of letters, but also what letters they are. An "I" takes up significantly less room than an "M". I stick with the 2.7" because it keeps the smaller letters at a decent size and the larger letters from being so big they are hard to manage.
