The Book Itself is Formidable
To say that this book is well-researched is a great understatement. Elisabeth Griffith has done a remarkable job of consolidating the many facets of women's fights for equality in a way that is readable and fascinating.

Extraordinary Book
This is a book that every woman (and even some men) should read. It describes in detail the slow march of societal changes as they impact women.

An exciting subject rendered mind-numbing.
I had been looking forward to reading this book but after 100 pages or so it simply wore me down. This should have been a story told with the excitement, visible emotional engagement, and literary style this important subject deserves. It could have been a page-turner like so many other history books I have read and enjoyed, for example Jill Lepore's "These Truths". Instead it too often reads like an endless and confusing catalog of names, dates, organizations, people, and events that left this reader lost. The chapters are organized chronologically but there are distracting jumps in time within them. The attempts to provide historical context are often superficial and occasionally irrelevant. There were so many exciting personalities involved in this struggle but Dr. Griffith’s dry and lifeless personal descriptions take all the individuality out of them. The style of writing consists of an endless stream of brief declarative sentences as if the author simply wanted to cram as many facts as possible into the shortest space. I'm sure she has a deep feeling about her subject but that is not at all reflected in how she writes about it. All that said, I can recommend this extremely well-researched book as a useful source of information but not as an historical study that will provide enjoyment or inspiration for further study.

A tour de force!
Just outstanding. I've got the hardback, and have also pre-ordered the audiobook. Essential education, I would say.
