Q: Our magnet has been periodically not working at all. DO the magnets ever go bad and need to be replaced

An electromagnet works only when current passes through it. If there is any interruption in the flow of currentthrough it, it won't work. If you can bypass the electronics and put voltage across the terminals of the magnet itself you can tell if the problem is the magnet (a piece of iron, or a screwdriver shaft will stick to the magnetwhen energized), or the control module. Check that all connections to the module are secure (tight). The only thing that could ruin an electromagnet is an open winding, or an open terminal to winding connection.

Q: Is this model designed to be install outdoor?

I'm not sure if it made for it but the unit appears to be sealed so I don't see why not

Q: Does this one match Serial#1297-1078? Mine has a wire coming out of the left corner on top.

Ours did have a wire coming out of it. We had to have a custom "frame" made for it so we could get it to work in the capacity we needed. It works great, we have it as a secure gate for our Adult Day Care.
