Fascinating history on ever level
I have always found shipwrecks and marine archeology enthralling but the added human element of this story takes it to a whole different level. Your heart starts to race as these divers take on these dives that are both technically and emotionally fraught. The middle passage and what these millions of people suffered can become an abstraction. But the images of these divers holding artifacts from these people's forced final journey brings it all to vivid life. Yet it's an uplifting story in the end, and you want to know what is next for this amazing team and the stories they are able to bring up from the ocean depths. Highly recommend reading for anyone interested in history, marine archeology, diving, or just a great story!

Forgotten history
An account of the exploration of one of the most horrendous events of the horrific Middle Passage slave trade, as a team of African American divers explore a shipwreck off the coast of Brazil in which hundreds of slaves were deliberately drowned. A look at the history that many today would rather it remained hidden from view that is a must read for anyone who wants to understand a past that is still all too real for many, and that gives voice to those millions whose voices, and freedom, were stolen. Told in a matter-of-fact style that makes it all the more gut wrenching.

Fantastic!
This is a really good book! It tackles a tough subject with grace and combines multiple events to give a broad overview of the slave trade. The authors also do an amazing job of explaining the cultural significance of examining the shipwrecks and slave trade!
