Highly recommended for the military/science fiction lover.
I have been a fan of Mr. Dietz's work for many years now. If there's one thing you can count on, it's that the action is non-stop and you are in for a page-turner. I felt that "Into the Guns" was a superb piece reflecting the very real discontents in our society that still exist today. Yes, there is a Civil War between the South and the North... yes, the book implies more support for the Union than it does the "New Confederacy". I can see why some reviewers felt differing opinions than I did. However, I live in the South and was immensely thankful for the detail that Mr. Dietz incorporated into the book. Almost every town in the South that Mr. Dietz references, I have visited. A couple I have actually lived in. So of course it was exciting to take a rarely offered, fictitious journey through my own backyard.I felt that the characters have been developed very well and I certainly felt a connection with the major characters. You won't find too much time spent on the extraneous details that some people enjoy. This book, while not skimping on character development, is truly more about the plot than anything else. Again, the characters are well done and I enjoy riding along with them, but being that this book is clearly a page-turner (and that's good for the style and intent of this book), you will often be kept up wanting to read just one more page, then another "last page", then another "last page" you promise yourself. As I mentioned previously, the plot is truly what you'll be immersed in with this book. It is fast-paced but Mr. Dietz delivers the detail necessary to round out the world. There's clear points of suspense and innumerable waves of action. I am glad the author is planning on making sequels to this book as part of "America Rising". There is much more to tell and if there is one thing I wanted, it was a good ending. You don't quite get that with this book. There's so much more left to do. It's more apt to call the ending a "break" than anything else. Nonetheless, I was satisfied.A quick side note: Mr. Dietz's mastery of military fiction (or military sci-fi for that matter) is second to none. He knows his stuff and it's clear through his storytelling. You almost feel drafted into the military yourself through reading this book. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but you do learn a good bit about military colloquialisms, rankings, armor and weaponry, et cetera. In conclusion, I would highly recommend adding this to any military fiction/science fiction -lover's bookshelf. If you are looking for a page-turner that opens itself up into a trilogy, then check this out. If you want aliens, then go elsewhere. Mr. Dietz has other books for that (wink).

A solid read
Mixed reviews on this title as it didn't take flight until late into the story. Character development was slow but rewarding. Plot predictable but big challenge to mix a minor ELE with love, war and politics. Enjoyed it overall and look forward to the next chapter. Actually like a great movie cut to size with the expectation of looking forward to the Directors Cut being released.

Dietz Delivers an Unqualified Success!
Just when I thought the post-apocalyptic genre was played out along comes “Into the Guns” by William C. Dietz. I read a lot of military sci-fi and end of the world stuff (zombies, EMP, plague, etc.), and quite frankly I had grown tired of it all. However, Dietz takes it to the next level. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The action starts on page one and moves along at a steady pace. There are no wasted scenes or dialogue. The characters are well developed too. Dietz puts you into their heads so you can see why they make the decisions they do. This story is really about soldiers who find themselves in extreme situations they are not trained or prepared for, and where no clear right or wrong answers exist. In short, "Into the Guns" delivers! I will most certainly buy the next in the series.

Poor effort, that
Deitz is a reliable journeyman writer but this is one of his worst. Good premise, nicely dark, totally lacking in any memorable characters. Multiple protagonists that speak think and act the same. Tedious

Post-Apocalyptic America
On May Day, 2018, the United States is struck by sixty meteors. The Chinese believe that the U.S. has attacked. Therefore, they fired their nukes at us in retaliation. Washington, D.C. is destroyed, along with the President and Congress. What's left is a country controlled by warlords and independent bands of mercenaries.First Lieutenant Robin "Mac" MacIntyre's unit was near where the meteors struck in Washington state. Now, "Mac" and her unit must figure out a way to survive. Meanwhile, in Mexico, Energy Department Secretary Sam Sloan has to find his way back to the United States by using a kayak as well as evading bands of marauders. After the destruction of Washington, D.C., Sloan is the highest ranking official left, which will make him the new President. To make matters worse, the country has split into a new Union and new Confederacy. A second Civil War is about to erupt. For Robin, the stakes are even higher, because her sister and father are on the opposite side from her. This is the first book I've read by William Dietz. I like the premise of a post-apocalyptic United States, and the action is good. The characters are good overall, especially Robin and President Sloan. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

FIRST IN A GREAT NEW SERIES
William C. Dietz is one of the premiere authors in the SciFi Miltary genre. His powerful LEGION OF THE DAMNED series will soon reach double figures and has already hit the dozen mark if you count the Prequel Books.Dietz hits it out of the park again with INTO THE GUNS, the first book in the America Rising series.Meteors streak across the sky exploding and rocking the worlds' societies and infrastructures. Foreign powers react to the disaster as an act of war by the existing superpowers. Meanwhile, the US military's attempt to restore order is met at every turn by resistance from insulated pockets of refugees. Meanwhile, powerful corporations step into the power gap in a play to establish a new form of government with their best interests and financial well being paramount. In these days of worries and fears about possible world ending apocalypse, Dietz spins a tale of loss, power, and new found strength.

Top action read.
Good idea bringing a new American Civil War into this very exciting and fast paced war story. Top writer and it packs a punch

Could this really happen so quickly, or would it take far longer than a month or so??
This is the first book in a 3 book series about America after Earth is hit by meteors that kill most of the American Government, thus causing civilisation to break down. One of the main characters is an Army lieutenant in charge of a six vehicle Stryker (armoured personel carrier) squad. They decide to eventually turn mercenary in order to survive, and earn money for food and shelter. They eventually end up back in the US Army, helping the other character, the Secretary of Energy, to become the US President, and help take back the Southern states, who have seceeded from the US.It's not a bad read, but at the same time, it's not the most intense military action book I've ever read. I'll keep reading for the next book, but some of the things that happen seem to only be there to provide conflict for the main characters, without driving forward the story.
