Does this need an update before being put into a PS5?

No. Just open packet. Unscrew back of PS5 and slot in. Rescrew back if PS5 on and off you go. SIMPLES.

Can this be used as an external hard drive if put in a case?

Should be fine in a M2 external enclosure. If it will get heavy use you might need an aluminium case to help keep it cool.

Just installed this on ps5 when formatted the speed says 6543 Is that right? As on box says 7300
