Green Bell G-1008 Nail Clipper (Takumi No Waza)

I wanted to wait a few years before writing a review of these nail clippers because most nail clippers seem like they are working well at first. These have definitely stood the test of time in my opinion. These nail clippers started out great and are great now. Sharp and smooth in operation, they easily clip through any of my nails. They may have ever so slightly dulled since their first use but the fact that I can't be certain has got to be a positive. They've never accidentally come apart. The built-in nail file works well. Should they ever cease to operate well I'll try to remember to update my review just to a give a sense of how long they've lasted.

Several months ago I happened to read an article in one of the online news aggregators, entitled "I Found the Best Nail Clipper at the Airport in Japan" (the article can be found on The Strategist section of nymag dot com website and is dated June 22, 2016). That article led to my finding these nail clippers here on Amazon and my eventual purchase of two different sizes. To begin with, the nail clippers sold here on Amazon are in fact the real thing - the product and packaging is in Japanese as shown on this Amazon page, and the clippers are Made in Japan, Green Bell brand, of stainless steel. These are high quality personal grooming tools. I purchased both sizes: - large size: Green Bell Nail Clipper G-1008 (Takumi No Waza) this is model G-1008 - small size: Japanese Nail Clipper(S size) this is model G-1006 and appears to be identical to the Seki Edge model SS-106 The large size incorporates a nail file into the center part of the top piece. It's not immediately obvious that this is a file, but it is reasonably effective. The similar Seki Edge product includes a more traditional nail file on the bottom part of the top piece (see link below). My impression is that this large size is designed to appeal for the style of the clipper as much as the quality, and for that reason it has omitted the nail catcher and the different type of file. These products are part of the Seki Edge product line of beauty and grooming tools. They have a website in English that is comprehensive in describing the company, it's history and the products (sekiedge dot com). There is a similar large size nail clipper sold under the Seki Edge brand that also incorporates a nail catcher and may be a good choice as well: Seki Edge Satin Slim Clipper model SS-109 . Note that this model does have a larger nail file on the bottom part of the top piece. The quality of these nail clippers is apparent from when you first remove them from the packaging and hold in your hand. They are relatively heavy and perfectly finished. The quality of the cut is precise and clean. The cutting edges mate perfectly and cut without any jagged edges or imperfections. I am hopeful that these will be durable and last for a long time. The price is a bit higher than most other run-of-the-mill nail clippers, but not unreasonable for a high quality product. My only small criticism is that it would be nice if the packaging included a translation into English so that it would be possible to read what is said. I will be using these regularly and if longer term experience results in any further comments then I will return here and update my review.

I've spent decades struggling with checkout aisle nail clippers that often would not even clip my nails when forced with all of my might--often the nail would just bend rather than cut, and I would have to nibble away at it. I felt a little silly typing "best nail clippers" into my browser, and when multiple articles named this clipper as the best I felt even sillier spending $20 on it. But it was a wise decision, and the online articles were completely right. Almost all checkout aisle clippers are just stamped out pieces of metal. These Green Bell clippers are forged, machined, and sharpened like a quality surgical instrument. When you clip a nail, you literally have to just move the handle, there is virtually no effort involved. And the cut is super clean, no jagged edges. If I had any complaint, and it's very minor, it's a little clumsy to open the clipper because of the rounded edge of the handle. But this tool still gets my five star recommendation....

The Green Bell G-1008 Nail Clipper is simply outstanding. The craftsmanship is second to none, with sharp, precise blades that cut through nails effortlessly without splitting or cracking. The ergonomic design feels comfortable in the hand, and the stainless steel finish is both durable and attractive. It even comes with a handy nail file that works like a charm. This clipper has elevated my grooming routine to a professional level. It’s more expensive than regular clippers, but the quality justifies the price. Highly recommend this for anyone who appreciates fine tools that last!

Update: As another reviewer has pointed out, there IS a so-called nail file on this device, it's just not where one would expect to find it. The "file" is the center strip along the top handle. I find it worthless, it's barely abrasive and would take forever to file a fingernail. However, in the nine months I've used these clippers, they've worked well and are good and sharp so I added an additional star. I would order them again. Unlike some other reviewers, I can't wax philosophically or invoke Thoreau in my review of these nail clippers. They shipped directly from Amazon and I had them in two days, Prime. There was no "carbide nail file built into handle" as some have described. The packaging was completely printed in Japanese, so I guess that's their origin. They are larger than an ordinary nail clipper and thus easier to handle, but mine aren't deserving of the gushing praise which has been heaped upon them. Sadly, these snap off fingernails and they go flying away just like cheap dime store clippers. They aren't any sharper than others I've owned. I compare these to my Zwilling J.A. Henckels Ultra Slim Nail Clippers which I've had for two years now, and they don't come even close to measuring up. The Henckels are incredibly sharp and the nail simply falls away. Admittedly, there's a big difference in the price. My guess is that this clipper is not of the same quality which many reviewers had shipped directly from Japan, it certainly lacks the built-in nail file which has been referenced. These would be rated two stars were it not for good build quality and size. You won't feel cheated, but don't expect the life altering experience described by others. They're nail clippers, folks, and run of the mill, at best.

My quest to find the ultimate nail clippers, I wanted to find a set that would keep it's sharpening, cut with precision and be easy to hold, took me on some interesting journeys. I've long given up on store bought sets, and yes Tweezerman I'm even looking at you here, they work fine for a short while then loose their edge. That experience of reaching for a clipper, cutting a nail only to have to muscle down on the clipper and have it do a half cut (or partial cut) leaving you with a "shark from Jaws" edge on your nails was driving me crazy. This is the Ferrari of nail clippers, incredible ergonomic and smooth to hold. It's a masterpiece of design with a well placed built in nail file should you need it. Not that you will though, it cuts is one smooth action leaving you with perfect edges every single time. Clipper is one size only, and can be used for either hand or toes, it's larger than the smaller size you see in drugstore sets but still offers plenty of comfort for trimming your fingernails. If you want to buy only one nail clipper set and keep it for life, this is it! Look no further. Worth every dollar. Speaking of dollar, protect your investment by keeping the clippers in a single small box or bag so they don't bang and rub against tons of other items in your drawers (or travel bag), this will further protect the blade and keep them sharp for life.

These clippers totally impressed me. The grip is comfortable, the cutting area is nice and sharp, the design is really attractive with a built in file on the handle and they work flawlessly without exerting much pressure. These clippers are quality and I plan to buy more for my travel kit (and maybe another for the car). You won't be sorry with these clippers.

I'm a 5 foot 7" man with medium sized hands (I wear medium sized kitchen disposable gloves) and my index finger is 2.5" long. This is the perfect sized fingernail and toenail clipper for my hand. My wife (same height and with longer fingers) claims that she finds it too big to hold comfortably in her hands. That being said, it is sized similarly to an American toe nail clipper. Enough on size. The sharpness of this is a marvel! Like my Japanese kitchen knives this makes cutting dry nail a breeze. The cuts are very sharp, requires the gentlest of pressure, and I now spend an extra few seconds per finger filing down the sharp edges on my finger nails. It is build solidly and just seems like the kind of device you could drive a car over and it wouldn't show a scratch. It's not heavy -- just solidly built. I just wished that I had discovered this many decades ago and avoided wasting money on cheaper products that were either flimsy and fell apart or very dull and required pressure to cut nails. I found this via a WireCutter recommendation and am so glad I did. Just stop reading and buy it.

One of my favourite nail clippers i have ever used, ever It has a nice chunky build, and isn't flimsy. Works well on fingernails and also toenails. It has kept it's sharpness months after purchase. Will definitely buy again if I happen to lose this one
